Chapter 38

Andrew’s party was going strong when I arrived. This time, I didn’t bring any alcohol with me, deciding I should probably try to avoid corrupting the youth as much as I could. I’d need to take another soul soon, but for tonight, I’d be OK.

“Hey, about time you got here!” Andrew greeted me when I walked in.

“Got sidetracked,” I replied easily. Truth was, I’d wandered around the city trying to convince more people to help with the carnival. I’d been successful in arranging a few more vendors and had scoped out a few bands I wanted to show Maggie.

“I bet,” Andrew grinned, assuming I’d meant something else entirely. “Jess is here.”

“Yeah?” I asked idly, not really caring.

“She’s been asking about you. She had a thing for Lance, but since he’s with Maggie now, she’s on the prowl more than usual. And you did take her to homecoming. In her eyes, that means something.”

“Why haven’t you hit it yet?” I asked.

“I’m not her kind of guy.” He shrugged, sipping his beer. “Plus, she seems a little too high-maintenance for my taste.”

“And you think I’m down with high-maintenance chicks?” I snorted.

“I didn’t say you had to marry her, dude. I’m just saying she’s kind of easy, and she obviously wants you. I haven’t really seen you pay attention to anyone but Maggie, and since you and Jess are in the same boat on that subject, I figured I’d throw you a bone.”

“No thanks, man. I’m good.” I slapped him on the back.

“Suit yourself. If you change your mind, she’s over there with Corbin,” Andrew said.

I followed his gaze and saw her chatting animatedly with Corbin, who had a small smile on his face. It wasn’t his smile that revealed his feelings. It was his eyes, and they looked like he’d much rather screw her and throw her over a bridge after. I excused myself from Andrew and made my way over to Jess and Corbin.

“Hey,” I said, clearing my throat as I stopped beside Jess. She looked at me, and her eyes lit up.

“Brax!” she exclaimed a little drunkenly, throwing her arms around my neck and planting a sloppy kiss on my lips.

“Wow.” I pushed her away and shot a look at Corbin, who was staring at us with his tiny signature smirk on his face.

“Brax, I didn’t think you’d be coming tonight,” he said as Jess pawed at me.

I forced a smile on my face and gently pushed her away again. “I figured I wasn’t doing anything else,” I replied.

“No?” He looked uninterested, and his green eyes scanned the room. “Jess, love, why don’t you have another drink, so the men can talk?”

“OK,” she said with a titter, running her hand down my arm. I ground my teeth and shot a look at Corbin, who only continued to smirk at me.

“What are you doing?” I hissed when Jess had stumbled away.

“Whatever do you mean, brother?”

“You know what I mean! You have her drinking like a fish and pawing at me,” I grumbled.
