Chapter 7

Rob buzzed us through the security entrance to his building and was holding the door to his unit open for us on the fourth floor when we got off the elevator.

“Hi, Denise, I’m Rob. I met Cole on the phone already. Please y’all come in. Can I get you something to drink? I just made a fresh batch of Bloody Mary’s and one of lemon drops. I also have beer, wine, coffee and soft drinks,” Rob spit out as we walked into his unit. He shook my hand as I passed, but didn’t offer to hug or shake hands with Denise.

“A Bloody Mary sounds great,” I told him.

“I’ll take a lemon drop, please, Rob,” Denise told him.

“Very well, make yourselves comfortable by finding a seat or looking around the place,” he told us and went to a wet bar to pour us drinks.

Rob’s unit was lavishly decorated with a collection of individual pieces of furniture that didn’t go together as any kind of set, and none of it looked to be production furniture. All the furniture appeared to be custom made, much of it of beautiful, natural wood. The walls were decorated with mostly tribal items from Africa I assumed, spears, swords, two sets of bows and arrows, some masks, and oddly I thought, two original oil paintings of nudes. One was of a black native woman and the other of a thirtyish looking white woman. Both paintings were beautifully done and both the women projected a kind of sex appeal that just jumped out from the canvas and grabbed me in the groin. They were the kind of art that connected with some nerve centers in one’s body and created their own reality, that of a living relationship between the viewer and the subject in the painting. I felt I could have studied them for hours without tiring of their beauty.

“Your furniture is beautiful, and these paintings are magical. Was your furniture custom built?” I asked.

“Yes, custom built and they’re mostly one of a kind pieces,” Rob told me in a matter of fact way, not bragging, just stating the facts. He continued by saying, “I had the good fortune to be in the right place at the right time with the right offering a few years back. I sold my software company to one of the big search engine companies at the peak of the dot com craze. I made a small fortune, gave my ex-wife half the proceeds in a divorce settlement and took up a new life. That’s the short story of my ability to purchase fine, custom built furniture and collectables that appeal to my rather unrefined tastes.”

He handed us our drinks and asked, “Would you like to sit and talk or would you like a tour of the place first?”

“Is there something more you would like to show us?” I asked.

“There’s no hurry,” Rob said. “There are two play rooms and a master bedroom, and we can look at them anytime you like. Please have a seat.
