Chapter Twenty Three

Weix

∞∞∞

Weix’s plan was thus: meet with the Lotus Clan delegation and hunt down Anthrax, who was wanted for murder and other crimes by both sides. After that, hopefully, they could get their cooperation in grinding the whole Ascenders organization into dust.

Lasha decided to escort her family to a different town, not wanting to risk The Ascenders finding them, but promised to meet them in Wildeward and support their endeavor. The four of them made the trek to the town when the meeting was supposed to take place on foot; only Weix was in a condition to fly and he preferred to stay unnoticed and not to paint a target on their backs if The Ascenders spotted them. He had to remind Vitorous that avoiding attention was the way to go when they prepared for sleep that night.

“Vitorous, if you tower looks anything like what I saw other mages summon, then it would be a miracle if nobody noticed us,” he pointed out.

“But there would be proper beds and rooms in there!” Igraxus whined.

Rodner rolled his eyes and huffed:

“Mages always make those things too big. It’s like a phallic representation of their power.”

“How many levels does your tower have?” Weix asked the wizard pointedly.

“...twelve. Alright, alright, I guess we will have to do with this.”

Vitorous cast a spell and a magical dome appeared in the middle of the forest. It wouldn’t be visible from the air, covered by the branches of the high trees. Weix nodded with satisfaction.

Only after he realized that meant staying in close proximity, in a space not much bigger than a tent, with the three other men. He tried to give Vitorous as much space as possible, even if his heart was breaking as the mage kept avoiding him. But the mage was right; Weix was his jailer now, no matter the good intentions he had when he transferred the spell to himself. Maybe he could offer to keep the first watch and only skulk in when the others were asleep...

Igraxus ruined his half formed plan.

“I will talk to the animals around here. They will let me know if we are in any danger, so we don’t have to keep watch.”

That’s how Weix found himself sandwiched in the middle of a pile of beautiful men. He tried to be as far as possible from Vitorous, but Rodner and Igraxus took the outer positions near the walls, leaving him no choice but to lay next to the mage. He squinted suspiciously at his friends but accepted his fate. This was the closest he got to Vitorous since the disastrous spell put a wall between them. No; the closest since they separated after destroying the Dungeon. The closest since Vitorous held him that one last night, before the mage broke off their relationship.

It was also the furthest he could be from the man. The black hole of the magical binding was sucking all the joy from being so close together.

“You should talk to him,” Igraxus whispered into Weix’s ear from where he was curled behind his back.
