Chapter 11

The next morning, I wake to find a pair of neon-purple eyes staring at me, no more than half a foot from my face. The only thing that kills the scream building in my chest is the purring sound that rolls over me. Shadow tilts her head at my exasperated groan, looking as if she is the one who’s been disturbed, not the other way around.

“Hey, Shadow,” I say with a yawn. “Can’t say I’m happy to see you.”

The little dragon-like creature sniffs daintily and goes back to purring. Maybe I attempt to pet her because I’m not fully coherent or maybe it’s because she’s so pretty, but I lift my hand, fully intending to pat her head. She eyes me warily before a low hiss sounds between her fangs.

I have never been, nor will I ever be, a morning person. So instead of leaving well enough alone, I hiss back at her, and louder. Those purple eyes dilate, and the hissing immediately halts. After two sharp jerks of her tail, she goes back to her contented purring. So I try to pet her again.

After establishing my dominance, and most assured insanity for threatening a small but lethal creature, Shadow lets me stroke her head. Her skin, composed of black scales, is hard and yet soft like velvet.

“It wasn’t my idea to have a pissing contest first thing this morning,” I say to Shadow as I look around for Draal. Instinctively, I already knew he wasn’t there when I first awakened because I couldn’t feel his presence.

Shadow yawns, flexing her claws on the fur blanket, reminding me of a typical housecat back on Earth. She lets me pet her for a little while longer before hopping from the bed and trotting out the door. At her departure, I sit up and rub the remaining sleep from my eyes. After downing a quick breakfast, no doubt left behind by Draal just for me, I dress and inspect my feet. They aren’t blistered like I thought, but there are some tender areas. Mindful of those, I slip on my shoes and head outside.

The cool air brushes my face, and the sounds of the villagers tickle my ears. Conversations, laughing, and other delightful noises make up the cacophony of their daily life. Although, there is one noise I catch that is different from the others. It’s a high-pitched ringing sound, like the sharp strike of metal. Curious, I follow it until it leads me to a tent that’s larger and taller than the rest. I’m not sure how I missed this, but considering my life over the last couple of days, I’m giving myself an excuse.

This tent has a more triangular shape with an opening at the top that allows for the escape of the smoke that curls into the air. There are poles in front of the entrance, giving it a small awning, and the flaps have been pulled back and tied, affording me a view inside.

I peek around, trying to catch a glimpse of whoever and whatever is inside, when a familiar pair of golden eyes meet mine.
