CHAPTER 37

LANA

It's a nice evening, with hardly a cloud in the sky, and just a slight breeze to keep the heat at bay. The moons hang close in the sky, providing just enough natural light. I'm curled up with a book on my balcony, a glass of fae wine at my elbow, and a plate of cheese and crackers on the side table.

The floor beneath my feet trembles, rattling the table and my book, spilling some of my wine.

"What the hell was that?" I speak to myself before setting my book on the table and leaning over the balcony to see if anyone else noticed the tremor. A few guards mill about below, looking up at me.

"What's happening?" I call down to them.

"I'm sorry, milady. Must be King Penn."

Penn? The floor shakes again, stronger this time, and my book and wine glass topple to the ground. Miraculously, the glass doesn't shatter.

"Sorry again, milady! Maybe now would be a good time to go inside."

No sooner does he speak when an ear-splitting roar cuts the air and a large flash of light over the balcony fills my eyes. I blink, and when my vision clears, a dragon towers over me. With each flap of its giant wings, my hair whips around me and a blast of wind sends leaves scattering all over my balcony.

I stand transfixed, eyes pinned to this beautiful creature.

"This can't be real," I whisper to myself. The dragon cocks its head, then flaps its wings, stirring up a gust that nearly knocks me off my feet. I steady myself on the railing and watch it turn in circles, playfully, like a dog chasing its tail. "Penn?"

It nods.

"Oh!" My hand flies to my mouth. "You can understand me as a dragon!"

Another nod.

"Can you also speak in my mind?" I ask, making sure I'm not crazy. I'm feeling like I am.

Yes. The answer is strong and clear in my mind, no dragon lips moving.

"But—you're so ... beautiful?" Another nod. "So, you're real, you're really a dragon, and you can understand me." He nods again.

Go to my balcony. A puff of smoke accompanies his request. I turn and open my balcony door before running to my armoire for a robe. I slip it on before crossing to his bedroom door.

It's unlocked.

I open it and step out, finding myself in a room made of gold. Never in my life have I ever seen so much opulence. Gemstones, jewels, and all kinds of jewelry fill containers to the brim throughout his room, spilling onto its nearest surface. A dragon's treasure trove!

Padding my way to the balcony doors, I fling them open and find Penn's dragon form on the other side.

Hop on.

He lowers a shoulder for me to climb up. I reach for a thick scale on his back and use his leg to heave myself onto him. I throw my leg over and sit in front of his wing joints, ahead of the wings themselves.

A loud purr hums from the beast beneath me. I run my hand along his iridescent body.
