Chapter Thirteen

Scents of cinnamon and anise filled the kitchen, as Carter wiped the flour from her hands. From the corner of the room, her mom hummed along to “Let it Snow” playing on the radio. She smiled and scooped the latest batch of cookies off the baking sheet.

“You make quite the sous chef,” her mom said, coming up beside her to admire the perfectly shaped biscochitos—a holiday tradition in their household. “In fact, you might beat me out of a job one of these days. You’ll get to take over the holiday traditions and baking.”

“I like being the helper.” Carter moved past her to put the cookies into the oven. “It’s all about having the right company,” she added, hopping up onto the one spot on the counter that wasn’t covered with flour.

“Speaking of the right company, how are things going with that girl from the night of the dance?”

“Mom,” Carter said, playfully throwing a dishtowel in her direction.

“What?” Her mom turned with her hand on her hip and stared at Carter. “You can’t blame me for asking. You’re sealed up tighter than Fort Knox. I have to work to get anything out of you.” She turned back toward the counter, where she was putting the final touches on their last batch of Christmas candies. “What did you get her for Christmas?”

“I see right through the change in approach,” Carter said, laughing as she leaned back against the cabinets. Out of respect for Logan’s privacy, Carter had refrained from even telling Aiden about their shared kiss and their texts back and forth each day. Now she took a deep breath. This was her safe space, and she knew how lucky she was to have that in a mother. “I did get her a gift.”

“I knew it! What did you get her?”

“The thing is, she’s more than a friend.” Carter dodged the question. “But I don’t think she’s ready for anyone else to know that.”

“Honey, anyone with eyes can deduce what they want. I saw the way she looked at you that night. The girl’s got it bad.”

“She’s not the only one,” Carter admitted. “I really like her, but I don’t want to mess it up.”

“Okay, then, what did you get her for Christmas?”

“It sounds so silly when I say it out loud.” Carter covered her face with her hands.

“If it sounds silly, it probably means it’s heartfelt. You don’t have to share if you don’t want to. Just make her feel special.”

“Thanks,” Carter said. She hopped down from the counter. “Can I take her some of the biscochitos to go with her gift?”

“Only if you wrap them nicely and present them in a fashion worthy of coming from this household.” Her mom smiled, as she handed over the Christmas tree-printed beeswax wraps and a bundle of ribbon. “Remember, it’s all about making sure it’s heartfelt.”

Carter set to work pulling in a dozen of the cookies from her first batch and wrapping them with a bow. “I’ll be home later,” she called out, as she collected the rest of the packages from the hallway and headed for the door.
