Brandon

Brandon’s eyes were open before his alarm had even gone off—the first time that had happened in… well, probably ever, if he was being completely honest. And judging by the tiny bit of gray light coming in through his bedroom curtains, it wasn’t even fully daylight yet.

He rubbed his tired eyes and didn’t even try to stifle a yawn as he looked over at his bedside clock. Yeah, it was way too early, but he really needed to wake up.

Mark was sleeping next to him and Brandon watched the slow, steady rise and fall of his muscular chest for a few moments. He reached over and lightly rested his hand there, just above Mark’s heart, and sighed. In a couple of hours, Mark would be gone.

Brandon had obviously known the time was coming, but the harsh reality of it was only beginning to sink in. A couple of hours from now and Brandon’s bed would be empty. He’d probably still be able to smell Mark’s cologne on the sheets later that night, but Mark wouldn’t be coming back. Not for a long time, anyway.

Maybe not at all.

“Good morning, sexy,” Mark’s sleepy voice pulled Brandon from his thoughts. “Why are you awake so early? Are you secretly turning into a morning person?”

Brandon laughed quietly as he leaned in to rest his head against Mark’s chest. “Not even close, so don’t get your hopes up. I just…”

He didn’t know how to put his feelings into words. He didn’t want to sound weird or creepy or desperate, but he also wanted to let Mark know that he really would be missed when he left.

“I know, babe,” Mark murmured, absently stroking Brandon’s hair for a moment before kissing the top of his head. “I feel the same way.”

Brandon smiled. Of course he did. Brandon hadn’t even needed to give any sort of weird, awkward explanation. He just knew.

“I wish you didn’t have to go,” Brandon said. “Maybe stay just a couple more days? The rest of the weekend, at least?”

Okay, so maybe he did sound a little desperate, but he couldn’t help it. He’d gladly trade a little bit of pride for the possibility of spending another day or two like this with Mark.

“I wish I could, babe.” Mark reached down and tipped Brandon’s chin up until they were looking into each other’s eyes. Brandon could see the mixed emotions there, and they looked a lot like the same emotions Brandon had been wrestling with. Sadness, regret, longing… yeah, that pretty much described Brandon’s mood for the past couple of days. “I have obligations back home, though. Next time I’m in town, I’ll try to stay a little longer—or maybe I can arrange to take some vacation days. But even if I can—”

“We’ll still end up like this,” Brandon finished for him. “I know. I’ve been telling myself the same thing over and over. You’d think I’d be okay with it by now.” He sighed as Mark wrapped him in his arms and squeezed tightly.
