Chapter 21

“This is stupid. I should go with you!” Kit slammed the car door closed hard, and I winced. I got out and followed him up the steps to Liam’s house. He was hopping mad, his body rigid with tension. I couldn’t blame him. I understood his frustration. Did he think I wanted a confrontation with Pinelli after he’d seen us with Javier and Talon? Putting off the meeting would only delay the inevitable. I’d better find out what the fallout was so I could prepare us both for what was to come.

But one thing was for certain. There was no way in hell I was taking Kit with me to an unpredictable meeting with Pinelli.

“Baby, I’m just trying to keep you safe.”

“While running headlong into danger?” He spun around, his eyes cloudy with anguish. “You don’t always have to do everything on your own. I can help.”

“Kit, I’m not going to war.”

“Aren’t you? This man is scary. He saw us with them. You don’t know what he’s going to do.”

“He’s fair.”

“He made you work ten fucking years for him to atone for something your father did! Not you but your father! I don’t have the faith in him that you…do.”

His voice cracked, and a tear slipped down his cheek. Dammit. I cupped his face, even as he tried to slap my hands away.

“Kit, stop. Listen to me.”

He stopped struggling. “I just want to know you’ll be okay.”

“I will. Don’t you trust me?”

He sniffled. “I don’t trust him.”

“And I’m not asking you to. Trust me. Trust me that I want to spend the rest of my life loving you. I don’t intend today to be the rest of my life.”

“Promise?”

“I promise. Pinelli is a mean son of a bitch, but he’s not someone who’ll blindside you. If he wanted to kill me for betraying him, he would come out and say it. The way he did with my father.”

“I don’t know how you can talk about him with so much respect after what he did to your dad.”

“It’s fucked up and not easily explained, I know. Maybe it’s working for him for a decade, but I know the man and what he’s capable of. He won’t kill me today.”

“But will he do it some other time?” His voice rose with hysteria.

“I can’t speak of the future, but not today. Let’s take one day at a time. Hmm?”

He threw himself into my arms and hugged me tight. “I just love you so much.”

Seeing his reaction made me feel a thousand times better about his rejection of my proposal. Javier had been right. Kit hadn’t turned me down because he didn’t love me. That was the only important thing to take away from that unplanned fiasco.

“And I love you.” I removed a handkerchief from my pocket and wiped his eyes, then kissed his forehead. “Take a deep breath and compose yourself.”

He nodded, closed his eyes, and breathed in several times. My heart softened.

“I’m okay now.”

I doubted he was completely fine, but he wasn’t railing at me anymore, so that was a win.
