When I checked my phone the next day, I had way more texts than normal.

Some were from Michelle, asking if I was okay, asking if I’d heard about the rumors and then telling me she hadn’t started them.

I didn’t believe her, but I wanted to badly enough that I just let it go, reassuring her that I wasn’t upset.

More surprising was a text chain from Jake. He was apologizing profusely and swearing he hadn’t meant to actually hurt me.

I let that go too, reassuring him that I wouldn’t tell as long as he left me alone from now on.

I knew if I got him in trouble it would only make things worse for me. He was very popular and his friends would find some awful way to retaliate. There was no winning in situations like these for a girl like me.

Knowing that Carter wanted to and would have defended me helped though. It made me feel stronger and less like a victim. I’d never felt like someone was in my corner like that before, to the point where I knew he’d throw everything away to stand up for me.

I took a few days off and so did Carter. I dearly hoped no one made the connection.

When we finally went back, it wasn’t as bad as before. The rumors seemed to have calmed themselves at least to the point where I wasn’t being directly confronted anymore. At least not until Carter came home that night, bursting into the house, wrath in his eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” was the first thing out of his mouth.

“Tell you what?”

“All the awful things they’re saying about you at school. It came up during the staff meeting. The school is cracking down on it on social media.”

I shrugged. “I don’t even check my social media. Besides that, what could you do about it?”

He hugged me, being very careful with my head. “It’s my fault! I told you to drive that stupid car around and someone must have seen it.”

“My friend Michelle did,” I told him.

“Your friend started those rumors?”

I shrugged again. “I can’t be completely sure, she denies it, but I think so.”

“I’ll get you something more sensible to drive tonight. I’d trade the Tesla with you but too many people have seen me driving that. What kind of car do you want?”

I waved him off. “No. Stop. You can’t buy me a car. It’s bad enough I’m borrowing one you already had. Just forget it. The damage is done.”

“I’m so sorry,” he said, kissing the top of my head. “I saw some of the comments online, and I can’t stand that they’re talking like that about you. And in case you need to hear it, it’s all bullshit. You aren’t any of those things they call you. You’re an absolute angel, and I would know, okay? Now what do you want me to do?”

I raised my face to him. “Fuck me. I’m better. Please fuck me.”
