TEACHER'S PET by R.K. LILLEY

When I checked my phone the next day, I had way more texts than normal.
Some were from Michelle, asking if I was okay, asking if Iâd heard about the rumors and then telling me she hadnât started them.
I didnât believe her, but I wanted to badly enough that I just let it go, reassuring her that I wasnât upset.
More surprising was a text chain from Jake. He was apologizing profusely and swearing he hadnât meant to actually hurt me.
I let that go too, reassuring him that I wouldnât tell as long as he left me alone from now on.
I knew if I got him in trouble it would only make things worse for me. He was very popular and his friends would find some awful way to retaliate. There was no winning in situations like these for a girl like me.
Knowing that Carter wanted to and would have defended me helped though. It made me feel stronger and less like a victim. Iâd never felt like someone was in my corner like that before, to the point where I knew heâd throw everything away to stand up for me.
I took a few days off and so did Carter. I dearly hoped no one made the connection.
When we finally went back, it wasnât as bad as before. The rumors seemed to have calmed themselves at least to the point where I wasnât being directly confronted anymore. At least not until Carter came home that night, bursting into the house, wrath in his eyes.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â was the first thing out of his mouth.
âTell you what?â
âAll the awful things theyâre saying about you at school. It came up during the staff meeting. The school is cracking down on it on social media.â
I shrugged. âI donât even check my social media. Besides that, what could you do about it?â
He hugged me, being very careful with my head. âItâs my fault! I told you to drive that stupid car around and someone must have seen it.â
âMy friend Michelle did,â I told him.
âYour friend started those rumors?â
I shrugged again. âI canât be completely sure, she denies it, but I think so.â
âIâll get you something more sensible to drive tonight. Iâd trade the Tesla with you but too many people have seen me driving that. What kind of car do you want?â
I waved him off. âNo. Stop. You canât buy me a car. Itâs bad enough Iâm borrowing one you already had. Just forget it. The damage is done.â
âIâm so sorry,â he said, kissing the top of my head. âI saw some of the comments online, and I canât stand that theyâre talking like that about you. And in case you need to hear it, itâs all bullshit. You arenât any of those things they call you. Youâre an absolute angel, and I would know, okay? Now what do you want me to do?â
I raised my face to him. âFuck me. Iâm better. Please fuck me.â
