The invention of the wireless radio by Guglielmo Marconi affected survival of the passengers and crew aboard the Titanic. An electrical engineer, Marconi constructed a system of long-range wireless communication, making it possible for ships at sea to communicate. By 1912, 589 ships were equipped with a Marconi Room that included a telegraph where wireless signals could be sent and received using Morse code, a system of dots and dashes that represent letters of the alphabet. At Captain Smith’s request Jack Phillips sent out a distress call at 12:15 a.m. on April 15. The closest ship to hear the distress signal was the Carpathia, 58 miles away. The closest ship with wireless was the Californian, but its equipment was turned off for the night.

From the Marconi Room the signal was wireless—code tapped to other ships to announce their distress.
