CHAPTER TEN

Donovan Asks for Additional Help

All sick cats at the shelter on Earth are showing rapid signs of improvement, including Khan. They meow happily to one another. Many are up and about, pacing their cages with renewed energy.

Eric and Dave are seated in the shelter office having a video conference with Dr. Michael Montgomery, who heads the National Feline Studies Lab.

“Yes, doctor, the results have been extremely favorable. Our cats have been given new life. We can’t thank you enough.”

“Glad to hear the great news, Dave.” Michael smiles and gives a thumbs up.

“Since the vaccine has been so effective on felines, human trials are underway. As you know, a few people in Moscow have fallen ill to a variant of the virus. They are in critical condition. Hopefully, emergency authorizations will be granted for the vaccine’s use abroad. It’s a shot in the dark but nothing else has worked.”

“Good luck and keep us posted. Thank you again for saving these animals. By the way, are you sitting down?”

“Yes, I am. Why?”

“We want to introduce you to someone. Come on in, Donovan.” Dave motions for the huge black cat to join them. He walks in on his two hind legs and looks down at the screen.

“What the heck?” Dr. Montgomery’s eyes widen in disbelief as he sees Donovan raise a paw in greeting.

“Hello, sir. Pleased to meet you. I am a living descendant of an advanced cat species originating from exoplanet Kapteyn b. We are called felidors. I traveled to Earth with the hope of possibly receiving help for my relatives back home. They are also gravely sick from a deadly virus.”

Dr. Montgomery’s mouth is hanging open. A few seconds tic by before he can find his voice again. “My gosh, I am in a state of shock, as you can probably tell. Are you actually asking for the use of the vaccine on an alien species of cats?”

Donovan’s emerald eyes plead as he gazes at Doctor Montgomery on the video screen.

“Yes, there are many of my brethren who are at death’s door. All our efforts to develop an effective vaccine have been unsuccessful. Is there any possibility I can transport some lots back to my planet?”

“Transport? How do you propose you do that?” Dr. Montgomery is still flabbergasted to be talking to a cat. “And how in the dickens are you speaking the English language?”

“I know it’s hard to believe. The felidor race has been in existence for much longer than life forms on your planet. We are able to learn any language, and we can also travel through space and time.” Donovan tries to speak slowly so as not to unload too much information at once. “Would you like me to demonstrate our transport skills?”

“Of course!” The doctor slides his chair back and stands up, bending over to peer at his monitor.

“We haven’t seen him do this yet, either.” Eric laughs. We’re ready to have our minds blown again!”

Donovan takes a few steps back. He looks out the open door of the office at Khan drinking from a water bowl in his cage.
