Chapter 11
âWhat the hell is he doing out here so late?â I whispered to myself.
Jason was in the middle of a conversation with one of the ogre guards, and my blood ran cold at the sight of the headmaster right behind them. The old man seemed like he was lost in thought and had forgotten that there were other people with him, though I noticed his long gray beard was tied into several braids like a Viking about to go to war. It was only the second time that Iâd seen the powerful mage so distracted that he didnât notice his surroundings, even though he played up the part of the genial if absentminded professor.
The first time Iâd seen him so distracted had been when heâd cast some kind of protective shield around the edge of the campus that had made his eyes turn bright red. That had been a frightening moment when weâd stumbled across him, and it wasnât something I wanted to relive any time soon.
It wasnât too surprising to see Jason and the headmaster together, though, since the younger mage was practically Alecâs shadow, but it was weird that they were out so late. I glanced behind them toward the north wall, and a shiver ran down my spine. Theyâd likely used the portals buried deep in the giant trees that acted as sentinels for our campus, and the dream that Iâd had of the giant realm flashed back across my mind.
The trio stopped near the cafeteria and chatted for a few more minutes before the ogre broke off and became one with the shadows. I watched the darker shape slither across the ground until it disappeared into the inky blackness that hovered around the front gate and then turned back to Jason and Alec. The ogre would probably relay whatever new orders heâd been given to the other guards, and I made a mental note to keep an eye on their movements, too.
âIf I could just get a little closer, then I could hear what theyâre talking about,â I muttered to myself.
Jason and the headmaster were just a little too far away from the pillars that surrounded the classrooms, so there was nothing to hide behind between where I was and where the two men stood. If I had better night vision, then I might be able to read their lips, but that wasnât a skill that most humans had, and theyâd notice if I summoned my banehound so that I could use his night vision.
But the conversation was over before I could come up with a plan, anyway. I saw Alec say a few final words, clap the younger man on the shoulder, and then turn to head inside for a snack.
The look that the younger mage gave his shoulder was nothing short of disgust, like it was the most vile thing in the world to have contact with the headmaster. Conspiracy theories flitted across my mind like a late night special on the History Channel, but most of them were easy enough to wave away.
