Chapter 15
âI didnât make you wait too long, did I?â Jared asked.
He sat down at the table, in the exact same spot that Sheriff Trent had threatened her. She tried to suppress a shiver.
âIâve been here all morning, talking with Saskia,â Clover answered. âWe had a lot of work to do.â
âAnything noteworthy?â he asked. He seemed genuinely interested, and she really wanted to tell him.
âNot really,â she said.
The last thing she wanted was for Jared to become involved in her investigation. Sheâd never forgive herself if he got hurt over something sheâd instigated.
âCan I say you look beautiful today?â he said.
âDidnât you already tell me that this morning?â she said.
âI canât really remember,â he said. âI can say it as many times as I want, though, because itâs true.â
Jared ordered them some teas, and Clover found herself examining his face in detail. In the light he looked even more attractive, perhaps even beautiful. She wanted to stroke his face, to feel how smooth and flawless it was.
âWere you really going to kill yourself last night?â she asked.
What the hell are you thinking? You donât ask him a question like that!
âI thought about it,â he admitted. âFor a second there I thought I might actually do it.â
âIâm sorry,â she said.
âMaybe if you hadnât been there...I donât know. Weâll probably never know.â
âIâm glad I saved you.â
Mrs. Crowther placed a tray on the table with a steaming teapot, two cups, a jug of milk, and a cup of sugar. The old woman seemed mighty interested in the two of them. Clover wished sheâd just mind her own business.
âIâve had those thoughts before myself,â said Clover. âI know how dark and lonely they can make you feel.â
âI noticed the scars last night,â he said.
Clover felt self-conscious whenever someone mentioned them. It was a hot day and she really wanted to wear a t-shirt, but she wore something long-sleeved to cover her scars.
âCutting takes away the pain,â said Clover, âif only for a brief time.â
âWhat pain?â he asked.
âAre you serious?â she asked him. âEverybody knows about my pain. I was the best gossip this town had since the hurricane blew down the chapel. You could say Iâm infamous.â
âI donât listen to gossip. You tell me your story.â
She thought about Frankie, and his now sudden connection to Sheriff Trent. She couldnât tell Jared everything, but she could give him a glimpse of the horrors sheâd been through.
âMy boyfriend died, and I kind of had a breakdown,â she said.
âThat must have been tough,â he said.
âIt was a nightmare that I never thought Iâd get through. Even talking about it now is hard, but Iâve gotten by, with therapy and the help of my friend Saskia. Iâve stopped cutting myself, and my life isnât nearly as dark as it once was.â
âWere your parents there for you?â
âIf they were, I might have been able to get over it much quicker. No, my parents are a cause of different miseries in my life. My mother is an alcoholic and my father is having an affair with another woman.
