Chapter 16
Guggenheimâs was right down the street from the library, so Siobhan decided to complete the homework Auntie Louise had given her.
Louise had loaned her a book about magic theory, because she knew the library wouldnât carry it. Then she had suggested that Siobhan get collections of mythology, and maybe they would help her figure out where the raven had come from.
The library downtown was an original Carnegie building, dating back to the early 1900âs. It was a sturdy brick and stone building, with arched windows. There was a newer branch on the east side of town, but Siobhan had always loved the dark polished wood and musty scent of the old library. It felt like home.
As she walked in, she felt herself settle immediately. The librarian looked up and nodded at her, then returned to shelving books. Siobhan had seen the woman before, but never learned her name. It had never seemed to matter. She was a woman who had given up on trends and decided to go with a signature look. Her hair was cut in an asymmetrical long bob, and she wore blue glasses with round lenses. Today she was wearing a long linen tunic over a long linen skirt. In the winter, she often wore long wool skirts and boiled wool jackets, looking antique, but not specifically from any time period.
Siobhan went over to the computer system to look up what she needed. She set the bag of pearl sugar down on the desk and took a deep breath. She and computers didnât always get along.
âThe system is so slow, you might as well just ask me,â the librarian said softly. She was wheeling her book cart past the computer kiosk. âThe computers take up less space than the old card catalogues did, but they arenât as reliable.â
âOh, you donât mind if I ask? Usually I know where to go to find what I want.â She felt relieved. Even though she loved exploring the library, she didnât want to spend the entire afternoon there.
âThatâs why Iâm here.â She gestured around her, with her palms upturned. âWhat are you looking for?â
âIâm interested in mythology, but not just Greek or Roman. More multi-cultural?â
âOf course. Fiction, or nonfiction?â The librarian looked delighted, raising her eyebrows and smiling.
âNon, I guess. More reference. Iâm doing research on ravens.â Siobhan felt like she was confessing something, as if the librarian knew more than she let on.
âHmmm, interesting.â The librarian led the way through the shelves, âWeâve got comparative mythology here, and individual books about various cultures, Native American, Norse, Celtic. Hereâs an interesting one, A Dictionary of Superstitions. Not a great title, but lots of good information.â
âThis looks great, thank you.â Siobhan eagerly took the book from her hands. It had intertwining snakes on the worn cover. This was a well-loved book. She brought it closer to her face and took a descreet sniff. She loved the smell of old books.
âOf course,â She began walking away, over to the kidâs section, turning her head to talk to Siobhan over her shoulder.
