Organizations of Note
Ballistic Missile Trauma Research Lab: The division of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology that tests the effectiveness of protective body armor against different types of firearms. When possible, the lab uses cadavers to determine how the armor and munitions will affect human bodies.
Haikou crematorium: A crematorium in the Chinese province of Hainan that is rumored (falsely, as it turns out) to supply human flesh to a nearby restaurant. In a tense scene, Roach visits the crematorium and questions its director about the speculation. Unsurprisingly, the director denies the reports and is not exactly pleased with the inquiries.
The Harvard Brain Bank: A research facility at Harvard Universityâs medical school that dissects and analyzes human brains to gain insight about mental illnesses.
Promessa: A Swedish company, founded by entrepreneur Susanne Wiigh-Mäsak, that has figured out a way to dispose of bodies using liquid nitrogen and turn the remains into plant compost.
The San Francisco College of Mortuary Science: The mortuary school that Roach attends for a day. She watches as students practice making incisions on corpses and embalming them for funeral preparation. The school closed in 2002, a year after Roach visited.
University of California, San Francisco, Medical School: The host of a memorial service for anonymous cadavers that Roach attends. The service is meant to honor the cadavers and pay heed to their invaluable role in advancing science.
University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility: A forensic sciences clinic that simulates different bodily decomposition scenarios. The teamâs mission is to learn how murder victimsâ bodies decompose. The information that the researchers obtain can be used to help investigators and prosecutors.
Wayne State Bioengineering Center: The automobile safety clinic affiliated with Wayne State University that uses impact test cadavers (i.e., human crash test dummies) to improve car safety.
