VOCABULARY WHILE READING

There are multiple opportunities within a lesson when vocabulary instruction can occur. Dr. Archer offers these examples of how to teach vocabulary during three different times within a lesson. These examples are applicable to all content areas.

Before Reading a Passage

The teacher should introduce the pronunciation of words that are important to the passage and provide simple examples of meaning for these words. As stated before, these words should be important to the content and ideally words that students will see again, even in other subjects. The teacher then provides engaging instruction on selected vocabulary.

This engaging instruction can include using items like word maps, critical attribute templates, word diagrams, as well as other templates (sample templates are provided at the end of the chapter). These templates can also be used to scaffold learning for struggling students.

During this time, the teacher can teach or activate background knowledge. What do the students already know about the subject or this word? The teacher can tie in previously known information that is relevant to the new vocabulary.

Next, the teacher assists the students in previewing the chapter. Previewing can be done by having the students read the headings and subheadings and ensuring the students understand the words used in the headings and subheadings. The teacher can pose questions like, “As you preview the chapter, how do you see the new vocabulary as being relevant? What connections do you see?” This can assist the students in understanding the information that will be covered and establishing a purpose for reading.

The teacher can also introduce strategies that students can utilize during reading, such as note-taking skills, graphic organizers, and word or concept mapping.
