The earl was home at last. The hour had arrived, and Collin needed to make a decision.
“Good evening, Collin. I trust your day went well?”
“Aye, my lord, the day went exceedingly well.”
“I’m happy to hear it.” The earl tossed his cravat onto the dresser.
“I thought you would like to wear the blue velvet this evening?” He waited for a response. “I had Bess freshen it up a bit.”
“I’m sure the outfit will be more than adequate.” Drake continued to discard his clothing as he headed for his bath.
“Did the banquet go well?”
“Yes, as a matter of fact it did. The Earl of Went sat next to the Queen the entire time. I saw him look repeatedly upon my wife to be. It is no secret he has long desired her and her lands.”
“Besides knowing you had the upper hand with your enemy, did you find the lady to your liking?”
“Melanie is very sweet. I’m sure she is eager to run her own home after being in our good Queen’s presence for so many years. She will make a suitable wife and mistress to you all.”
I already hate the girl.
“’Tis wonderful news, my lord. I am assuming you and the lady desire children right away?”
“It is one of the reasons for my marriage. I do believe she and I will grow fond of one another in time. Her amiable and loving personality leads me to believe she will make an excellent mother.”
She can give him the one thing I cannot. A child. Well, that and respectability.
“The staff are most eager to meet her.”
“She said just the same thing to me.” Drake removed his remaining clothes. “Make haste, Collin. I have some place I must be before attending the Queen and Melanie.”
Collin readied his lord quickly and quietly. He knew when his lord did not wish to carry on a conversation, it was usually something to do with pressing issues. Am I the pressing issue? A small smile found his lips. His mind was made up at last.
Drake danced a number of dances with his fiancée at their engagement ball. With each passing hour, the Earl of Balor realized how much he actually enjoyed spending time with Melanie. She laughed with an air of innocence he had long forgotten. And under all of her decorum, he sensed she was as kind and compassionate as she appeared to be.
He escorted Melanie over to the Queen. A stab of remorse settled over him, for he knew he was off to spend the night with the mysterious masked lover.
He was fairly certain it was something she would never understand if she were to ever find out. He didn’t understand it himself. He had thought of the man the entire day.
“I see you are about to leave.” The Queen smiled, showing she was pleased after all with his decision.
Her simple statement pulled him abruptly from his private thoughts. It was like being drowned in a bath of freezing cold water. Drake bowed deeply to accept his Queen’s hand and placed an ephemeral kiss on top of it.
