CHAPTER 11

While no request for embalming was made by the family, Emmett takes the liberty of performing several pro-cedures on the body that would otherwise not be done.

This is for him.

Two slits are made in the woman’s pale skin, one in her thigh severing the femoral artery and another in the carotid, near her collarbone. A tube pushes a cocktail of chemicals specifically mixed for the corpse — all made for preservation — through the body, forcing the blood out onto the table where it drains. Emmett massages the woman’s skin, allowing the fluid to go where needed. Her eyes have been capped and makeup will be applied after, but not until everything is washed and disinfected.

As the fluids fill the corpse, Emmett continues to massage the skin. The flesh is cold and clay-like, but a pink hue has replaced the jaundice tinge.

Once the procedure is complete, Emmett ties off the arteries and sutures the incisions made, applying a generous amount of sealing powder to ensure no leakage. A quick run through of the organs with a large, metal rod aspirates any trapped blood, then a drying fluid is injected. Through it all, Emmett never removes the woman’s gown nor does he peek at her breasts, checking to see if her areolas hold the same coral tone as Kate’s. Instead, he is a gentleman, has always considered himself one. When he met Kate, she was a virgin. He would have been too if it weren’t for a mutually curious encounter he’d had with a neighbor girl one summer, the two of them in a fort he’d made with friends. The encounter had lasted all of ten seconds. No ejaculation, just lightning quick penetration —once in, once out — enough for a quick change of minds for the both of them, a passionless and horrifying experience full of shame. Emmett waited as long as it took with Kate, not once pressuring her or even mentioning it. There was never any hurry. She was special to him, and he knew he had a lifetime. As short as it became.

To prevent seepage and a trail of fluids from here to his car, Emmett slides a pair of plastic underwear on the woman’s legs and pulls them up under the hospital gown, being careful not to expose her privates. The body is then disinfected, and moisturizer is applied to the face and hands.

The body has been through the process of preservation, as well as methods utilized to bring the corpse to a state of peaceful beauty. Emmett wheels the body out to his car.
