Pulling up to Herbert and Maxine’s home, Sheriff Branton’s mind was racing a million miles an hour. There was so much he needed to do, so much information to digest. With one of his towns teeming with government health officials, he would need to make a statement to the local paper. In addition, he was working out a contingency plan to put the entire county on a “boil water order” if the toxins were located in the drinking or tap water. Privately, he had instructed his wife and children to drink only bottled water until the location of the lead source was discovered.

His deputies had already secured the Williams’ perimeter, which was good. Glancing around, he didn’t see any press yet, but some of the neighbors had already started coming out of their homes and were now loitering. Still, he had time to get the situation under control and the first thing he had to do was speak with Dr. Craig Lenton.

He found him in the kitchen, sitting at the table and trying to console his wife who was giving one of the deputies a statement.

“Craig, good to see you,” he came over and shook the doctor’s hand.

The two were familiar with each other, having both interacted at some Canten events. They weren’t close friends but shared a mutual respect.

Motioning for Craig to join him outside, the two men walked out the front door and over to the side of the house for some privacy.

“Craig, I am so sorry about what happened to Jessie. And, I know the past few days have been difficult but I need to ask you some questions. To be honest, I was going to do this over at the satellite center where we’ve started setting up to test the water, but seeing you here and under these circumstances, I think it’s probably best. We’re going to take Ms. Williams to the hospital and get her stabilized before asking her any questions about what happened. I’ve been debriefed and it seems like her husband went crazy. Do you have any idea why he would have locked her in a closet? His death doesn’t seem like a suicide either; more like he just went into toxic shock and drowned.”

Craig agreed and shared with the sheriff what he knew. He talked about all of the sick people visiting him at the clinic, Jessie’s and Hubert’s symptoms, and the general exposure to the lake during the Bonanza several days prior to all of the chaos ensuing.

In return, the sheriff shared with Craig, what he already knew…that Jessie had died from lead poisoning. The toxicology report stemming from the autopsy had been pretty conclusive. Jessie, at a young age, was much more at risk from lead poisoning than an adult, but lead could be severely catastrophic to anyone who ingested it in large doses. The sheriff explained that lead could cause a number of psychosis events including mood disorders, memory loss, and in some cases, schizophrenia.

“Yes, Still Lake,” Sheriff Branton mused, “That name keeps coming up in conversation.
