CHAPTER 20

Frejnik

Frejnik worked in the main command center. His job was to monitor the shuttle flights to and from Kanor. This had always been routine. There were never any problems, especially since the Earthlings’ technology had advanced so much within the last year. He was impressed with how their shuttles became more advanced each month.

As this happened, his job became easier. His communication with the shuttles became less frequent. The Earthlings knew what they were doing. The equipment on Kanor was so advanced, he wondered if they even needed to have him or his fellow Kanorians in the command center at all.

He had supervised thousands and thousands of flights, involving millions and millions of people. His colleagues had done the same with their shuttles. The shuttles landed and departed in constant motion.

Today, however, he saw the first real problem. A flight went off its path. That had never happened. Ever. He imagined it might have to do with the unique situation they were currently experiencing – one he didn’t want to think about. It was too painful.

He saw the shuttle go off its path, and he lost track of where it landed. He had a general idea of an area it could have landed. He didn’t want to watch the screen. He didn’t want to know about it. The fewer details he knew, the better. Why did this have to happen on his watch? He wanted to use every bit of strength he had to stop himself. He didn’t want to tell the commander about the situation. He knew this would mean a search party.

But, he found himself reporting it. He explained that the shuttle had gone off course. He gave the time and possible location. He knew the commander would do the rest.
