Mack followed Charlie out of her office. He turned right, toward Campbell and Michael Brown, and Mack turned left, toward the elevators and Jess.

She found her friend hunched over her laptop, squinting at the screen.

“You may want to consider actually wearing your glasses,” Mack said as she sat down.

Jess glanced up, distracted. “Hmm? Oh, I forgot them at home this morning.” The brunette finished typing. “You look…kind of green, Mackenzie. What’s going on?”

Mack explained.

Jess whistled. “You just can’t catch a break, can you?”

“That’s an understatement. I think I should back out of the Jefferson trial. I don’t want whatever shitstorm is heading my way to interfere. Dorothy deserves your full attention, and you deserve a second chair you can count on to remain employed.”

“Absolutely not,” Jess said. “You do not have my permission to back out of this case, Mack. I didn’t ask you to second chair me because we’re pals, or because you need trial practice and I’m giving you a grand opportunity. I asked you because I need someone I can count on, someone who will ride into battle beside me. If we go down, we’re going down together, and it won’t be because some jackass at KGUN decided to get page views. Jury selection’s tomorrow morning, so why don’t you go home, get some sleep, and gear up. We’ve got justice to do.”
