CHAPTER 17

JONATHAN

“Can you do me a favor?” Hunter asked when Jonathan answered the phone.

Thank god. Jonathan had been waiting to hear from Hunter for days. Well, one day. It was Sunday, and he’d spent the day before trying not to think about Hunter and failing.

“Anything,” Jonathan said. He imagined a trip to Home Depot would be in his future.

“Will you go to a baseball game with me?”

That wasn’t what he was expecting. “What?”

“I got tickets to the Twins game for Quinn and me, and he bailed. Some dumb fucking excuse. And I already cried about it, but I spent money on these fucking tickets and I want to use them. You’re sporty. Please come with me.”

“You bought baseball tickets?”

“It’s the Pride game. Quinn and I always go to the Pride game. Though, usually with Lee. Which might be part of the issue.”

“He really bailed on you?”

“Are you coming with me or not?”

“Of course. Yeah, I’d love to go to a baseball game with you.”

It was an afternoon game, and when Jonathan picked Hunter up in front of his house, Hunter had both a baseball jersey and a cap on, and his rainbow-cuff shorts that were the primary issue in Jonathan’s life. The bridge of his nose was still red from the beach on Friday.

“Is it weird that I kind of missed you? I decided I needed a day off from DIY yesterday, now that my plumbing is up and running again, so all I did was paint my entire bedroom three times.”

“Taking a break from DIY with more DIY. I’m sure that was a quick job.”

“It took literally all day. Which is what I get for trying to give myself a rest day.”

“You’re a man who can’t sit still.”

“Unfortunately.”

Target Field was packed, and in the first two minutes of being there, Jonathan had seen more rainbows than he had ever seen at any other sporting event combined. Of course he thought about being gay when it came to sports, since Syd always had a lot to say about it. But she had a lesbian’s perspective of hockey. He hadn’t considered how many gay people liked baseball.

The first twenty thousand people there got free hats with a rainbow Twins logo on it, and Jonathan put his on backwards and soaked in the bustling concourse. He loved going to live sports both because it was fun to watch any sporting event live, but also because watching with other people was super fun. They found their seats in the lower level on the first base line before going to grab beers.

“How much did you spend on these tickets?”

“More than I usually do,” Hunter grumbled. “I figured it would be nice to treat Quinn, since I knew he would probably be thinking about Lee. I told him about these tickets months ago.”

“Let me reimburse you for mine,” Jonathan offered.

“No. I bought them so long ago. That money isn’t real anymore.”

“That’s not how money works.”

“You can buy me a beer.”

They grabbed drinks and settled in for the first couple of innings.
