CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Frankfurt International Airport

“HE'S MADE CONTACT WITH A GUY CALLED HINE. Steven Hine. His old colleague from Columbia. The guy who actually helped him escape from me in China. Can you believe it? Angell is running his own spy network, the cheeky bastard.”

Maxwell Prime was in Germany, being run by Dagon; specifically, by the Keepers of the Book, although he thought he was working for the Office of Inspector General of the CIA, investigating the activities of agents assigned to work with Monroe and Aubrey and building a case against them. He was told it was a joint CIA-FBI task force, and that NSA was being kept in the dark. It was the kind of cover story that appealed to Prime's sense of grievance against Monroe and he was led to believe that this could be a major stepping stone in his career.

As he learned on the flight from the black site to Ramstein, Dagon had no clue how their rituals—they called them their ‘operations’ for Prime's sake—had been compromised so successfully each of the last two occasions. They were on the ropes, and were gathering themselves for one last attempt. Prime came to their attention due to his failed snatch of Angell and the Book in China. Their success at blackmailing a certain CIA chief of station in Asia enabled them to gain access to the black site in Thailand as if they were legitimate intelligence officers. But they still had no direct line on the person or persons responsible for breaking up their “operations” last year. The compromised station chief had told them that Prime was being held on orders of some Brahmin in NSA: a connection of which they had been unaware. Prime would fill in the details nicely.

“Where is he now?”

“He's right in front of me,” he said into the concealed microphone. “He just got off an email exchange with Hine. Hine told him he made contact with the DC guys and that they are waiting for his next communication. Angell then sent Hine some gobbledygook about numbers, literary references, shit like that.”

“Can you send that to us?”

“How the hell am I supposed to do that? Your people are probably better equipped for that.”

“So how did you know what was in it?”

“Because the asshole told Hine in the email itself. In the clear. I read it over his shoulder, the dumbass. He was looking around, I guess for the other guy from the plane, but didn't notice me.”

“So ... not such a good spy, then?”

“He's beaten you so far.”

“Us. He's beaten us so far. Remember where you were sitting twenty-four hours ago.”

“Yeah, yeah. Bite me.”

“Where's Moody now?”

“Heading off to Dubai like he was told.”

His prey had just gotten up from the desk, hefting his knapsack onto his back, and making for another part of the terminal.

“Angell is on the move. Gotta run.”

“Keep him in sight. Our people are standing by throughout the terminal. We'll pick him up once we know where he's going.”

“What happens to me then?”

“You'll be briefed.
