The most famous ghost claimed to haunt the museum’s old hospital wing is George. In 1931, while being wheeled into the automatic elevator that was to take him to the operating room, sixty-one-year-old George Bailey met with a gruesome freak accident. The malfunctioning elevator first crushed him between the closing doors, and then dropped him down the shaft to the hospital’s basement. George’s injuries were critical and he died soon after he was recovered from the shaft. His wife later sued the hospital, but she received almost nothing in compensation for her loss. While one would expect a wrathful male presence to haunt the museum, George seems to be anything but angry.

Jeff Small, a museum volunteer, was cleaning his paintbrushes in the museum workshop, near where George was retrieved from the bottom of the elevator shaft. The radio was playing in the room when suddenly Jeff was struck by the feeling that he was no longer alone. Before he had time to turn his head and look around, he heard a male voice say, “Hello.”

“It wasn’t a question, like ‘Hello, is anyone there?’” Jeff said. “It was a statement.”12 When he turned around, he found that he was alone. Although Jeff had felt a presence on earlier occasions, this was the only time George spoke to him.

Galt Museum educator Belinda Crowson also received a weird greeting, but on this occasion the source could be clearly identified. About 2006, she was working in the office that she shared with a co-worker. Although her computer was turned on, she was not using it at the time and was busy with a project on her desk. Breaking the quiet of her office came a metallic voice that said, “Hello.”

Her officemate raised her head over the partition and asked, “Was that your computer?”

“Yes,” exclaimed Belinda in surprise.

Again the computer offered the greeting.

As far as she was aware there was no reason for the computer to speak, nor did it ever do so again.

George seems to spend most of his time in the basement near the old elevator shaft. Over the years there have been accounts of mysterious blue lights in the area. Lights flickering on and off and shadowy shapes moving along the walls have been reported, while sudden columns of cold air have also occurred.

George is only one of the ghosts that haunt the old hospital wing. The second-floor offices, which were once the children’s ward, are a very active area. “If the [intruder] alarms go off anywhere in the building,” Belinda observed, “chances are it will be on the children’s ward.”13 One of the first stories concerns a researcher who was working late one night alone in the museum. As he left the building and walked toward his car, he happened to look up to the second-floor windows. To his astonishment, he saw two children looking down at him and waving. Over the years, the names that have become attached to the little ghosts are “Sarah” and “Alexander.” Sarah appears to be about six, while Alexander seems to be between ten and twelve.
