MOM MARCHED THEM STRAIGHT into the kitchen and dumped everything in a heap on the counter.

“Alright, everyone into the car.”

Dad looked alarmed. “What? But it is time for the children to sleep!”

“Well, for this story, I need them to come with me.”

“No, this is ridiculous. It is too late.”

Hannah and Cam looked at each other. Mom obviously needed their help, but you didn’t just tell your dad it was time to go hunting dragons—and that went double for a dad whose jetlag wasn’t mixing well with Ravi’s “brews.”

“Um, Mom remembered that she forgot her camera,” Hannah started, haltingly.

Mom hesitated for a moment, but she was a writer. She grabbed what Hannah offered and kept on with the story. “Yes, I left it at Jackson Bottom this afternoon when we were out there getting pictures for the history column.”

“Han and me think we know where she left it. It will just be a little while, Dad.” Hannah could see Cam go pale again, but he was being way braver than she could ever be, if she’d been kidnapped by turkey vultures–Fire Eagles. She’d be hiding under the bed right now, not volunteering to hunt dragons!
