Chapter 21

I clawed my way back to consciousness, hoping desperately that I had broken the hold that Matthew’s memories had over him. Alicia’s desperate voice was the first thing I heard. “Get up, Matthew! Please, get up!”

When my eyes opened, I saw her dodge a swing of Johnathan’s. Matthew was on his hands and knees behind her, shaking his head. It didn’t seem as if she was really trying to fight Johnathan, just trying to keep his focus on her and off Matthew and me. It seemed things were

just about as serious as I had feared.

<Matthew? Are you all right?> I questioned worriedly.

<I think so. Thank you, Julia,> he said. Was it my imagination, or did his voice seem fainter than earlier? He tightened his grip on his sword and lifted his head. As Johnathan swung at Alicia, Matthew lunged forward, pushing her out the way, and met the oncoming blow with his own blade. Their swords collided. He growled and swung again, forcing Johnathan away from her and myself.

Not taking her eyes off of them, Alicia backed farther away and crawled back to me. I saw her right arm was bleeding as she knelt beside me. The sight of it seemed to unlock all the sensations that lagged behind my actual return to consciousness. Pain and hunger flooded me simultaneously. “Is it bad?” I whispered.

Alicia turned to me, her expression startled. “It’s not too deep,” she replied. “I don’t know how the hell you’re awake,” she continued.

“No idea,” I replied, as my eyes tracked Matthew’s movement. I felt the invasion of the bone-chilling cold. I tried to keep still. My body wanted to shiver, but I was afraid of ripping open whatever healing Alicia’s sutures and my own body had accomplished. More than anything, I wanted to conceal it from Matthew. I was worried that if he sensed it, it could retrigger the memories I had just pulled him out of.

“I’m glad he woke when he did. I don’t know how much longer I could have kept Johnathan at bay,” she continued. She glanced back down, looking worried. She inched away from me. “I know you need more blood, but I can’t give any.” Her gaze flicked back up and she rose to her feet, bringing up her more slender rapier. It clashed with the sword of another vampire and she once again stepped away from me.

A terrifying sound made me slowly turn my head toward the woods. Horrified, I saw what appeared to be a black rope extended out of the sky. Rowena had managed to create another of those strange wind things. A new pressure and a sensation of vertigo passed through me, as I felt Samuel bleed off more power from the ka-tet. I also felt a hint of desperation as the rope of coiled wind disappeared as it went quiet again, but I couldn't tell if it was my own, or Samuel's.

My attention went back to Johnathan and Matthew. They were matching strike for strike. For a moment, I saw Johnathan’s face.
