Having fudge for dinner was kind of fun. Granted, it was probably the worst thing in the world in terms of nutrition, but who cared. Heck, some of my favorite dinners as a kid were when my sister, Candy, would announce that we were having ice cream for dinner.
âMommy never made candy for dinner,â Lucy said.
âWell,â Tabby said. âYour Mommy is a hell of a cook.â
âOh, I donât know, I think youâre pretty damn good too,â I said, thinking about her chili made my mouth water.
Tabby smiled shyly.
âWhenâs Doc going to be back?â Lucy asked.
Tabbyâs face fell. âI donât know, honey.â
Lucy stared at the carpet.
Had I known it was going to take this long, I wouldnât have even recommended he go and would have come up with something else to distract Lucy. Damn. âHey,â I said. âI bet heâs just researching things really good.â
Lucy shook her head. âIt didnât feel like this before.â
She wasnât the only one who was worried, but there was nothing else to do about it. If he didnât come back after a few days, I was going to have to make a trip.
âWell, all we can do is wait. Hopefully, weâll know soon,â Tabby said.
âKeep in mind that Doc is crafty. He might even be cooking something up. After all, we donât know what heâs into when he isnât with us.â I reached down and scratched Isaac behind the ears. He meowed.
I needed to be positive for Lucy. Hell, I needed to stop coming up with worst-case scenarios about everything.
âThatâs true,â Lucy said.
âWhy donât you see if you can find another movie?â Tabby asked.
Lucy grinned and walked over to the TV.
âIf he doesnât come back, I donât know if Iâll be able to forgive myself,â Tabby whispered.
âNo sense in inviting trouble where there isnât any. Try not to freak out until we know something.â Even though I said it, I didnât believe it. Most of the time, Hell was coming. It was only a matter of when.
âBut itâs so hard. â
I nodded. âI know.â

I kept waking up all night long in the hopes that any little sound I heard was Doc coming back, but it was just the house settling. If Doc didnât show up soon, Iâd have to concede defeat. Granted, Iâd probably try to rescue him, but how does one rescue a ghost? I guessed Iâd do what I normally did, get me a supply of holy water and hope for the best, but I wished I had something to help me out.
Around five, I gave up and went to the bathroom. When I got out, I heard someone saying my name very softly. I glanced around the bedroom, but there was nothing there. Then I peered into the hallway.
I could faintly see Docâs outline. Not good.
âAre you okay?â I asked.
âIâve been better. Gotta go recharge early. I already told Lucy.â I couldnât even make out his face. Thatâs how weak he was.
âOkay. Thanks for letting me know,â I said.
âNot a problem, but that isnât why Iâm here.
