“I’ve got it!”

Morgan started awake as Sarah’s excited voice echoed through the open room. He rubbed at his eyes to clear away the fog of sleep as Sarah came running over, a wide grin plastered across her face. Her hair was a bit messy, having come undone from its usual braid, and she had a smudge of ink on her chin.

“How long have I been asleep?” Morgan asked, covering a yawn.

“Oh, about five hours, give or take,” Sarah replied with a shrug.

“Five hours?”

Morgan was shocked. Had he really be asleep for that long?

“Yeah,” Sarah said, rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment. “It took a little longer to translate the entire thing over, but boy, am I glad I did.”

“So, what does it say?” he asked, stretching his arms over his head.

“It’s mostly a history on the tower. When it was created and what its purpose is. There are also instructions on what we need to do to reach the top, though it doesn’t say what kinds of challenges we’ll be facing. The history of the tower is irrelevant but still fascinating. It was created for the sole purpose of guarding an ancient weapon, though the text didn’t say what exactly the weapon is.

“The most important part is what’s relevant to us. There are thirteen floors in this tower, with each representing a unique challenge. We’re on the first floor and have already passed the first. So we only need to pass twelve more before we can claim the weapon. From what I understand, this tower also has the ability to greatly increase personal strength. So, if we make it, we can expect to come out a lot stronger on the other side.”

Sarah’s excited expression faltered slightly, and her voice took on a more somber tone.

“The challenges won’t be easy, by any means. From what I understand, they will only increase in difficulty until we reach the top. There is no single correct way to beat any challenge, and we can repeat previous challenges as many times as we want to. But, as soon as we walk up those stairs, we’ll be unable to back out. We’ll have to either win or die trying.”

Morgan’s brow furrowed as he thought that over. The underlying danger was most definitely not lost on him. If the challenges increased in difficulty as they went on, then the gigantic Guardian they’d been running from was only the beginning and the easiest of their opponents. If they wanted to have any hope of beating this tower, they would have to kill that Guardian.

“Can we still leave now if we want to?”

Sarah nodded.

“We can, but we’d have to get past the Guardian if we wanted to leave.”

“What about beast zones? Can we open portals in here?”

Sarah bit her lip, her brows furrowing. After a few seconds, she just shrugged.

“I honestly don’t know. From what I read, escape would be impossible once we went up, so I assume portals wouldn’t work there. But maybe they’ll still work
