Arlo

Emerson and I finished our dinner, but I wasn’t ready for the night to end. I’d been captivated by the younger man from the moment I’d first seen him at the airport, and the more I got to know him, the more interesting I found him.

We stepped out of the cozy, warm pub into the crisp winter air. He wouldn’t be here but a few more days, and something about that made me a little bolder than normal. If a few days were all we would get, then I wanted to make the most of that time, and I wanted to make it unforgettable for him. I offered Emerson my arm, and he took it with a smile, the warmth of his touch sending a shiver down my spine and making my heart beat a little faster. “I have an idea. Are you up for an adventure?”

“Absolutely,” he replied. “What are you thinking?”

“Come with me, and I’ll show you.” We made our way down the street to Sugar Plum Park, where I was happy to see one of the reindeer-drawn sleighs was waiting for their next ride. The Hall family had been running the sleigh rides for years, but seeing them tonight from Emerson’s point of view gave me a whole new appreciation for what a magical experience they were creating for the town’s visitors. The reindeer’s antlers sparkled with tiny little fairy lights, and the collar of its harness was adorned with jingle bells that chimed when he moved. Add to that, the driver Gus’s costume, and it was like something straight out of a storybook. I couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride that this was my town. Instead of letting the closing of the factory that had once been most people’s main source of income destroy them, the citizens had rallied and built something special here. Something I was honored to share with Emerson.

Gus handed us a blanket as we climbed into the sleigh. It didn’t take us but a minute to get situated, sitting there side by side, covered in the warm fleece throw. I reached over and took his hand, twining our fingers together. Emerson’s smile softened, and his gaze met mine. “This is amazing, Arlo.”

I nodded. The moment felt important, which was ridiculous because we both knew he wasn’t going to be here long. I struggled to find something to say that wouldn’t reveal too much of what I was feeling, but lucky for me, Gus cracked the reins, and we were off, gliding through the snow-covered streets so I didn’t have to say a word.

I remember what it was like, living in the city. The nights always felt so busy, and the streetlights were so bright you could barely even see the stars, so I wasn’t surprised when I glanced over at Emerson to see the pure joy on his face as he looked around. Here in our little corner of the world, instead of bright, glaring streetlights, the whole street was full of twinkling, colorful Christmas lights.
