Chapter 22
WE ARRIVED IN MADRID and took a taxi to our hotel. On the way, I thumbed through a search on my phone trying to find information about this gala at the Royal Palace. I mistakenly opened contacts and Tamarâs name stared me in the face. An impulse to call her flashed through me. Was she okay? Had she given me up to Interpol? Did she have a choice? I squashed that impulse since now wasnât the time.
I got back to my search. From the news stories I managed to piece together, it was going to be held in four days in honor of the King of Spainâs sixtieth birthday. It was supposed to be a glitzy star-studded affair including heads of state and other monarchs from all over the world along with Spainâs elite.
How the hell were we going to procure an invitation?
Iâd think about that later.
Iâd booked an executive terrace suite at The Plaza with a view of the Royal Palace. It was two bedrooms and two full bathrooms with a lounge-dining room and a built-in kitchen. The terrace went the length of the suite and had three doors that opened up to views of the city. My uncle had spoiled me with fancy hotels while traveling. I wasnât ready to give it up.
The apartment was light and airy with a bamboo flooring. The kitchen and dining area had gray slate flooring. We were on a corner of the building and the sunny terrace went the length of the apartment. The furnishings were Neo-classic and mostly in white and beige with a pop of color here and there. Very much like the other fancy hotels weâd stayed in previously.
âIâm taking a shower,â I announced.
Without waiting for a reply, I took the master suite with the queen size bed, leaving the other bedroom with the two twin size beds to the guys. They would be roomies and Kincade would have to get over it.
I dropped my bag on the floor of the small room with the one large window. I expelled a breath, still stinking of demon guts and in desperate need of a shower. I stripped off my disgusting clothes and headed to the bathroom. It was equipped with a shower, which was fine by me. Even the bathroom had a door to the terrace. It was hard to resist despite the cold weather.
It felt great to strip out of those stinky clothes and into a hot shower. I scrubbed until my skin was bright pink and my hair squeaky clean. I stepped out, toweled off and dressed. All I needed now was a bottle of whiskey and I would be a boneless chicken for the rest of the day.
But I couldnât stop thinking about Tamar. I called her number and waited while it rang. It went to voicemail. I hung up, not wanting to leave a message, not knowing what to say.
A knock sounded on the bedroom door. I opened it to see a pale faced Kincade on the other side.
