Cincinnati’s first batter stepped up to home plate. He nodded politely to the umpire and to Guy. Then, on Happy’s first pitch, he smoked a grass clipper down to Doc at third.

GRASS CLIPPER: GRASS CLIPPER: ground ball. Also known as “daisy cutter” or “ant killer”.

“LEGGIT!”: call made by the cranks to encourage their players to run faster.

“Leggit! Leggit!” chanted the rooters.

However, much to the home team’s dismay, Doc’s frozen rope across the infield retired the batter by a step.

One hand down.

The second Cincinnati batter came up to the plate. He nodded to the umpire and to Guy. Then, on Happy’s second pitch, he smashed a daisy cutter to Doc at third.

FROZEN ROPE: hard line drive or throw.
