Tarla sank into the steaming bathwater with a sigh, letting the heat seep into her sore muscles. It had been too long since she enjoyed such luxury.

The water had been changed twice after blood and dirt swirled around her as she scrubbed the battle remnants from her skin. But the attendants finally left her to revel in the hot scented water, and she sank into it, letting the heat work its magic on her aching body.

Safety. Warmth. A reprieve from the chaos and violence that had nearly claimed her life. Tarla was grateful for the solace of her chambers, yet worry gnawed at the frayed edges of her mind.

As she soaked, her mind turned to recent events. Dagny, a princess? Tarla chuckled softly and wondered if Krom had known the true value of the 'prize' he had offered his warriors. Perhaps if Krom had been aware of Dagny's status, she would have been the one in robes at his side instead of Lyanna.

Her thoughts drifted to the Sister of the Light. Tarla had failed her. She had no way of knowing how the woman was being treated or what she thought of Tarla's escape. Tarla would have to return to the Gorthian plains and rescue her from the warlord Krom. That much was certain.

She shook her head, sending droplets flying. For now, Tarla intended to make the most of the queen's hospitality and relish the soothing caress of the bath.

Tarla leaned back and closed her eyes, the tension easing from her shoulders. But peace eluded her. Behind her eyelids, she saw the clash of swords and heard the screams of the dying. The metallic tang of blood filled her nostrils once more.

With a sigh, she sank deeper into the water. May the gods grant her a dreamless sleep when, at last, she found her bed. She had survived another day, but at what cost? Victory was fleeting; there would always be another battle to fight, another life to take—

A soft knock rattled the heavy oak door. Tarla bolted upright, water sloshing over the tub's rim, her hand already searching for the hilt of a dagger no longer by her side.

"Enter," she called, her voice steady despite the sudden hammering of her heart.

The door creaked open, and Dagny slipped inside.

Tarla relaxed and offered Dagny a tired smile. "I thought you would be long asleep, princess."

Dagny's pale cheeks flushed pink as she approached the tub. "I could not rest knowing you were still awake. Not after..." Her voice trailed off, and she stared at her bare feet.

Tarla understood. The horrors of battle lingered long after the last enemy fell. She reached out and clasped Dagny's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "The gods willing, we shall both sleep well tonight."

Dagny nodded but said nothing. Her fingers curled around Tarla's, clinging to the comfort offered.

Tarla sighed and shook her head. "Come, join me. The water is still warm, and I find I am in need of pleasant company."

A flicker of surprise crossed Dagny's face, followed by a shy smile.
