Sloane awoke, drenched in sweat, with Ryan lying beside her. “What’s going on?”

“I think your fever’s breaking.”

At his coaxing, she showered while he changed her sheets and brought her a Gatorade. She gulped down half of it before he helped her climb back into bed. Weak and exhausted, she fell into a sound sleep. She vaguely recalled Ryan waking her before he left in the morning to give her penicillin. For most of the day, she was in and out of sleep. Celeste popped in to check on her. Sloane, though awake, closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.

“I saw you close your eyes, Sloane,” Celeste called her out. A minute later, Jake entered her room and the two of them sprawled out at the foot of her bed.

“I should probably be quarantined.”

“You want something to drink? We only have about two hundred beverages.” Jake disappeared into the kitchen and returned with three bottles of juice and a can of Lysol that he sprayed around the room.

“Consider the room sterile.” He plunked back down, opening his bottle. “We want to hear everything.”

Sloane spilled mostly everything, leaving out the part about Ryan dealing drugs and her role in writing his papers. Sloane reiterated, when interrogated, that they were not sleeping together, and they’d not even kissed.

“He seems to like playing doctor with you.” Jake wiggled his eyebrows.

“He’s obviously into you.” Celeste’s brown eyes narrowed. “Are you sure you haven’t slept with him?”

“I’d remember if he opened me up for some surgery, like, forever. Anyway, the plot thickens.” Sloane told them about her visit to the health center and then dropped the bomb about her pregnancy.

Celeste’s eyes bulged. “What are you going to do? Have you told Connor?”

“No, I need to, tomorrow, I guess. But I really like Ryan. I still can’t believe this is happening. I have the worst luck.” Sloane rubbed her eyes. “And this has probably ruined my chances to be with Ryan.”

“Maybe not. I think he is crazy about you—just a feeling I have.” Jake wrapped her in a hug and gave her a light squeeze.

“But this situation isn’t helping anything. I feel horrible, and everything’s a fucking mess!” Sloane closed her eyes and rubbed her temples.

“Don’t feel like you have to get an abortion. I’m sure that’s what Connor will want you to do, but it’s your choice.” Celeste folded her arms.

“I’ve been trying to figure things out in my head. I don’t want to have a baby right now. I feel guilty, but with the exorbitant amounts of coke we’ve both done, it wouldn’t be good. And with my excessive drinking, the baby would have health problems.” She yanked the comforter over her head.

“You don’t know that for sure. I think you should have the baby.” Celeste tried to tug the comforter down. “You could give it up for adoption if you don’t want to raise it.”

“Are you crazy? She just said she didn’t want to have it—and with damn good reason.” Jake raked his fingers through his hair.
