You may also want to consider adding code numbers or identifiers to marketing materials. This is especially true of any print marketing or advertising you do. You can ask prospects for the code number in order to help you track where they are finding out about you.
A lot of pet sitters that I coach ask me how much should they should spend on marketing. The answer really depends on what you want your pet sitting company to accomplish - what marketing goals and objectives you are seeking to achieve. If you are a new pet sitting business, then obviously marketing costs will be higher than if you've been in business for years. You'll have to invest more to create your own brand recognition. The good news is it gets easier and becomes more cost-effective the longer you are in business.
There is something called the 'snowball effect' for a lot of businesses. For most, once they've reached their fifth, sixth or seventh year, they find they can usually lower their marketing costs significantly. After a few years, most companies have a solid client base that provides great word-of-mouth advertising for them by recommending their service to friends and family.
If you have an older pet sitting business and are not generating at least two or three new client calls a week, then you will need to remind prospective clients about you. Somehow you've slipped under the radar! You will need to employ many of the marketing tips and tools I'll address in this chapter in order to get those new clients calls to call. More good news: Most of the options I write about in this book are low-cost methods to get your business phone to ring.
