5 FATE AND THE FATEFUL

One two three four Every night we pray for war Five six seven eight Rape. Kill. Mutilate.

—U.S. Marine Corps training chant, Camp Pendelton, quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, January 6, 1989

Ghost Story:

The Swamps of Parris Island

You there, recruit. Do you want me to tell you that your mother loves you? That you are her bestest boy? Well, I won’t. I won't, and you can hate me for that. I give you permission to hate me, recruit. In fact, if you can stop whimpering and sucking wind long enough to find the energy to hate me, I will be duly impressed with you for the first time in your miserable life. But you should take heart,

recruit. Do you know why? Because I am not the DI in the swamp. I am not that man out there who rides boys like you until they are nothing but bloody flesh hanging off bones. I am not that man, because if I were, they’d lock me in the brig. But, son, let me tell you, if you ever decide that this is too much, that my tender mercies are too harsh, just tell me. I’ll be glad to let that DI in the swamp take a crack at your hide.

Now why don't you get down there in that mud and give me fifty just for puttin' your filthy eyeballs on me. Let's go!

Kirk had become the subject of one man’s torment. Something that was supposedly called “training.” During the day, Kirk was forced to run the interior of the warehouse repeatedly, until he nearly discorpo-rated from fatigue. At night, Kirk was given over to the tender mercies of Dr. Teeth and his unique teaching techniques.

Somehow, Dr. Teeth had managed to capture the bare essence of every power known to ghosts in the Shadowlands and store the essentials of them in his skulls: head bones he found floating in the Tempest, and some others that he collected himself. The skulls’ eyes were the portal through which the uninitiated learned the secrets of power. But each time Kirk looked into the eyes of the skulls, Mr. Demon would come out of the black pit in the center of his skull and begin screaming in Kirk’s ear. He would pass out, unconscious, and awaken the next morning with a severe headache. At first he didn’t think it was having an effect. Then, one morning, Kirk was late for muster. He missed the morning call because he had to polish his boots and his mask. He was terrified to be late, not knowing what the DI (a terrible

man from the swamps of Paris Island named “Gunter”) would do to him if he was late for muster, but knowing that it was something he’d rather not do. However, being late entailed more than just not being there. AWOL was not being at the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform. So even if he skipped shining his mask, he would be AWOL.
