Chapter 18

This time, when her phone buzzed in the middle of the night, Fiona was even more terrified than when Jake had called to tell her about his father. Because this time it was Charlie’s cell showing up on her caller ID, not Jake’s.

“Charlie?” She knew her voice echoed with fear.

“Fiona.”

“Charlie? Is he alive?”

“Yes, but it’s bad,” Charlie answered, his voice so strained she could barely hear him.

“Where is he?”

“They stabilized him as best they could in Bagram, and now he’s on his way to Landstuhl. You and I are listed as his next of kin. Can you get to Germany?”

“Yes. Are you with him?”

“No, I had to stay with the team.”

“Oh, God, Charlie, he’s all alone?”

“He’s been unconscious since we got him to Bagram.”

Fiona bit back a sob. “Can you tell me anything?”

“The building he was in got hit by an RPG. He has lots of internal damage, lost a lot of blood.”

Fiona couldn’t catch her breath. “What do I do, Charlie?”

“Get to Germany as soon as you can. They’ll send him on to Walter Reed as soon as possible if he…” Charlie cut himself off abruptly.

“If he lives,” Fiona finished for him.

“Yeah.”

Her heart raced. She had to move. Swiping the tears from her cheeks, she flung the blankets off and flipped the lights on.

“I’ll get to him, Charlie.”

“Call me. Please, Fiona.” Charlie sounded lost and scared.

“I will. I promise. As soon as I get there.”

“There’s something else,” Charlie said, and another icy tingle of dread lanced up Fiona’s spine.

“What, Charlie?”

“Joey didn’t make it.”

“Oh, no. Oh, Charlie.”

He made a strangled noise, like he was trying to hold back his own tears. She had no words to offer him, only the promise that she would be there for Jake as soon as humanly possible, that she would stay in touch and make sure Charlie knew everything she did.

Fear threatened to paralyze her, but she forced herself to move. She wanted to call Allie, who would drop everything to come help Fiona, but Allie was pregnant again, her due date only weeks away. Instead, Fiona called her brother Mike.

He was at her apartment within the hour, booking her flight, helping her pack, and giving her insight into the military’s process for dealing with injured soldiers and their family members. He’d had his own experience overseas. He never spoke about it in detail, but now it helped Fiona figure out what to do.

“They won’t keep him at Landstuhl for any longer than they have to. Plan on spending more time in Bethesda,” he said.

Mikey’s practical, unemotional affect kept Fiona moving forward, planning as if Jake would, in fact, be coming home. She couldn’t even consider the alternative.

As she waited for the hours to tick by before her flight, she created a group text message to give Charlie, her brothers, the guys in the band, and Cam, A.J., and Allie updates and information.

Mike moved around in her small kitchen, making them a simple breakfast of toast, scrambled eggs, and a strong pot of coffee.
