“No, Kal. Absolutely not.”

Everyone was already out on the back porch getting breakfast from the spread Patrice had prepared when Summer joined them.

Deuce was shoveling in scrambled eggs like his life depended on it, and Zora was next to him, turned in her chair with legs draped over his, cupping a coffee mug in both hands.

Asif and Gillian were eating quietly, and obviously still on the outs, and Asha was laying down the law to Kaleem about something.

Summer allowed her eyes to drift over to Lloyd who was cutting a piece off a Belgian waffle covered in strawberries and syrup. He looked up and smiled at her, pulling out the chair next to him and nodding toward it. If he felt at all awkward, there was no sign of it on his face.

Summer smiled back.

Adults, she reminded herself. We’re both adults. This is a completely adult arrangement.

“Good morning,” she said aloud.

Everyone returned the greeting and she headed for the buffet table, taking in all the choices.

“Not that anyone asked me,” Zora said. “But I think it’s a bad idea, too, Kal. I mean, what if something happened?”

“Nothing’s gon’ happen,” Kaleem said. “Like what could happen? Those things don’t go that fast.”

“Actually, they can average like ninety at the high end,” Deuce said.

His voice sounded hoarse. Probably from all the yelling at the top of his lungs the evening before.

“Ain’t nobody ask you.”

“Jus’ sayin’, man …”

“When’s the next time I’ma get a chance to ride on a snowmobile? I live in California. This is my …”

“You’ll get a chance. After the Olympics,” Asha said. “I can’t even believe you’d be this reckless.”

“That’s what I’m sayin’. I’m not reckless. I am not a reckless person. You think I want to get hurt? Especially now? I just …”

“Kaleem, if you do this …”

“Watch out,” Deuce teased. “She pulled out the ‘Kaleem’. You know when she says your whole-ass name, it’s trouble.”

“Why you over there startin’ shit, man?”

Summer placed a few slivers of lox, some scrambled eggs and a chunk of French bread on her plate then went to sit next to Lloyd. As soon as she did, she smelled him. He smelled like soap, but beneath that, she detected his scent, the one that seemed to have soaked itself into her pores since last night. And with the scent came memories. She squeezed her thighs tightly together. They ached a little, the way they did after a strenuous workout.

Lloyd, like the other guys, was dressed casually, wearing basketball shorts and a t-shirt, and was barefoot.

“Kaleem went running this morning. Saw some snowmobiles out near the barn and wants to take a ride through all that good snow we got last night.”

As he leaned in to explain the conversation to her, his beard tickled the side of her face. Summer shivered a little, remembering how it felt on her neck, her stomach, and her thighs.

“Even running in this weather wasn’t cool,” Asha said.

“I run in bad weather all the time.”

“Rain, back in California. Not ice, Kal.
