Fifteen

My head is pounding. It’s like my sinuses are the Hoover Dam and the Snot-arado River is building up behind it.

I think about Eaglestar the entire way home. I never thought that meeting one of my heroes could freak me out so much. Meeting Harrier was definitely a rush the first time, and even though that feeling eventually faded, and he even started to annoy me sometimes, he’s never treated me as badly as Eaglestar just had. I guess maybe I should give him more credit for the way he acts, considering who he is.

With Eaglestar, I felt like I didn’t matter. Totally insignificant.

I like to think Harrier knew what a giant ass Eaglestar would be, and that’s why he never introduced me to him.

I know they went on missions together and stuff, especially with the Guild. I kind of always assumed they were friends. But for him to not care at all that Harrier is missing and could even be dead… wow.

“Amber,” I say, swooping down to my roof.

“How can I please you tonight?” she asks.

“Do you sit around thinking about the dirtiest way to say innocent things?”

“Was I being… dirty?”

I ignore her. “Still nothing on Harrier?”

“I’m sorry. Nothing.”

“Thanks. We’re done for the night. Silent mode.”

I manage to sneak through my window, strip off the suit, and climb under the covers just in time for Mom to come in to wake me up for school. I try the old “too sick to go to school” routine, and even though it’s for real, she won’t have any part of it. It’s a good thing I got several hours of sleep before I left because this flu or whatever is starting to knock me on my butt.

As I ride my skateboard to school, my head continues to throb, and my throat starts to feel like it’s on fire. Great. So I’m supposed to go out searching for Harrier with my predecessor, and I’m gonna look like an amateur because I feel like I’ve been run over by a truck. Redhawk’s gonna wonder why Harrier ever chose me as his new partner.

It definitely doesn’t get any better once I get to school, either. All the loud noise in the halls makes my head hurt even worse, and it seems like everything is closing in on me.

After first period, Javier runs to catch up to me in the hall as I’m opening up my locker. I wonder if he’s gonna bring up the incident in the convenience store yesterday.

“Hey, are you okay? You don’t look so good.” He’s acting normal. Maybe he won’t.

“I’m coming down with something. That kid my mom babysits sneezed and coughed all over me.”

“Oh, that stinks,” he says, taking a baby-step backward.

“Yep.”

“So...” He seems kind of nervous now. “Yesterday at that store...”

Think fast. What’s my cover story? Why didn’t I come up with a cover story?

“Yeah, that was crazy, right? I’d just finished an energy drink, and I’ve been taking these karate classes, and it’s like I just went nuts with adrenaline or something.
