CHAPTER 9

"Hey buddy."

Joey's tone was the same as always, not especially anything at all. Carefree, unencumbered, and efficiency-minded. Joey didn't enjoy talking on the phone, but he answered reliably whenever Mike called.

"Whatcha doin'?" Mike asked nonchalantly as he could.

"Fixing," Joey said, a little bit of strain in his voice as he lifted or reached for something. "Your wife's washer."

"Oh," Mike said, surprised. He looked at the time. Eleven. That didn't seem entirely unreasonable. But he had called Shiloh and she hadn't answered. "You're at the house."

Joey breathed a half-hearted laugh into the phone. "Don't worry, buddy. Your wife went out to the gym or something, so she isn't here to see how a real man operates." Joey's voice strained again at the end of the sentence.

Mike stared at the wall. "To the gym?" he asked.

Joey muttered a string of cusswords under his breath, and then a loud bang. "I don't know, man, she was wearing exercise shit and said she was popping out. You need something?"

That was a million-dollar question.

Mike suddenly drew a blank. Why had he called Joey? Did he have a plan for what he was going to say? It seemed like he would have.

"No, man," Mike said. "I just, uh..."

There was a pause in the rattling and strained voices, and a smile crept into Joey's tone. "You talk to her about last night?" he asked. "Hot, right?"

"Hot," Mike agreed, trying to push all of the reluctance out of his voice. "Yeah, of course, man. She called me right after you dropped her off."

"You just calling to verify facts then?" Joey said, and Mike could hear the grin in his voice.

This had been the center of their friendship since its inception. Joey, carefree and not giving a fuck about anything. Joey, always operating on the fringe of decency, always cracking jokes, always willing to take chances no one else would.

But also Joey: never crossing any real line. Always at your back, teeth bared, on your way out of a hostile situation. He was - and maybe this would have been inexplicable to a lot of people - exactly that sort of guy you could trust not to fuck your wife.

And exactly the kind of guy you thought you could trust to fuck your wife.

"Kind of," Mike said.

"Look man, I'm sorry," Joey said, sending a stab of cold fear through Mike's chest. Another loud bang, another grunt, while Mike began spinning again, weightless, disoriented. "I was going to keep an eye on her the whole time, but then this crazy hot blonde was there and she wanted to take it up the ass from this black guy who's got this fucking insane dick. But she was fine, she had a red ribbon on, they have a system, you know?"

"I... what?"

"Just to say, you know: she was outta my sight for a while, but she was fine."

"Oh, right. Yeah, no, that's what she said."

"Dude," Joey slammed something else and cursed in what sounded like a foreign language, but almost certainly wasn't.
