Thanking the good folks isn't just a good idea in the workplace; it is important in service groups, churches, and every other kind of organization. It can be especially helpful in non-work settings where people serve as volunteers and are not concerned with career advancement, salary, or similar workplace factors.

If you're in a leadership position at your place of worship, for example, you can stand up and say something to the effect of “I'd like to thank everyone who volunteered to rake the leaves, tidy up the lobby, and do so many other things to make our building beautiful. I was so proud to see so many of you helping out.”

Thanking them in this way—publicly, as a group—makes it seem as if the group of helpers is large and contributes to the sense that everyone helps and goodness is rewarded. As a leader, you want each slacker who did not help out to think that everyone else volunteered: you're all alone, you're not included. Some of those folks who did not pitch in will feel like they missed out on something special.

You might think this is a case of preaching to the choir; after all, these helpful people would have shown up anyway, without being thanked. Well, I say you should preach to the choir, because otherwise they might stop showing up. You can go even further by individually thanking them, either in person or with a nice note.
