Chapter 11
Another Most Unusual Journey
(And a very quick one at that)
The top speed of the Nautilus, as described by Jules Verne in his novel, was 50 knots or nautical miles per hour. Captain Nemo confirmed Verne’s claim and proudly stated there was no faster vessel above or below the surface of the ocean. We would easily reach their island base in less than ten hours. What type of power source could maintain that kind of speed was beyond my comprehension, but Sherlock seemed to have a solid grasp on the subject. He asked if Captain Nemo had read his paper entitled “ A Speculation on Hypothetical Power Sources and the Speeds Capable of Being Attained in Their Utilization ”. The Captain replied that he had indeed read Sherlock’s paper and, while it was interesting and creative, it had only touched the surface of a fascinating subject. If Sherlock was interested, the Captain could show him the propulsion room, to which Holmes readily agreed.
The crew had already returned to their duties, so when Sherlock and Captain Nemo left the air lock chamber, both of them deep in conversation regarding the power source of the Nautilus, I was at last left alone with Luna. Of course, I was still dripping wet, shivering, and at a complete loss at what to say to the most attractive female I had ever laid eyes upon, even if she did happen to be a half human, half fish, mythical creature that may have been four times older than I and at times looked just like a dolphin. What does one say in that kind of situation? “Hello. Do you know that you are the most beautiful creature in the world? What are your plans for dinner next week?”
I could not believe I had just said that! What was I thinking? I felt ridiculous, but Luna just smiled and laughed in an enchanting, melodious voice that was like crystals in the wind.
“And just what did you have in mind, my dear Dr. Watson? Afternoon tea, with scones and jam and maybe some pickled herring sandwiches, perhaps?”
I clumsily replied, “Please do call me John. Yes, afternoon tea would be lovely. That is, as long as the tea is not seaweed based.”
What was I thinking??? In all the strange and unusual circumstances I had ever experienced while accompanying Sherlock, I had never found myself at such a complete loss of composure. Her eyes twinkled as she again laughed. “My dear, sweet John. You are so humorous. I do understand that seaweed tea does take some getting used to. You needn’t worry about that. But I do wonder where we would go for tea. The sandwiches could get rather soggy you know.”
To emphasize her point as she replied, with a grand flourish, she swirled her tail and again doused me with sea water from the pool. I slowly came to my senses about the shear impossibility of the situation as she gently took my hand and stated, “You are very
