Chapter 15

Adrien Charbonneau

THE GENTLE KNOCK ON the door broke my concentration. I was sitting at my desk, busy signing documentation that needed my signature. With the pen hovering above the paper, I ordered, “Come in.”

The door slowly opened and there stood Mia.

“Hi,” she whispered so low I barely heard.

Beaming, I pushed out of my chair. “Hey, how was lunch?” She closed the door. “My Foreman meeting went smashingly.”

She wrung her hands together, tentatively walking into the office. “Good, good, I’m glad.”

She didn’t seem okay. Actually, she seemed distracted.

Rounding the desk, my brows knit together in concern. “Are you okay?” I leaned against the desk’s edge, arms crossing over my chest.

Why was she fidgety and nervous?

When she moved closer, that’s when I noticed her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen. I pushed off the desk in a hurry. “What’s wrong?” I pulled her to me. She tensed. “What happened?” I studied her intently.

“I . . . um . . . ” Her breath shook. “We have to talk.” She bit her lip. But it wasn’t a sexy motion, it was a nervous gesture.

Irritation immediately stiffened me. If there was anything I hated, it was being in the dark. “What is it, Mia?” What was she trying to tell me and why was it so difficult? Was she trying to end things between us, whatever this was?

She flinched at my crisp tone. “Umm . . .” Tears glazed her eyes.

This was ridiculous. “Just fucking say it, Mia.” I stepped back, putting space between us. If she was trying to end things, I needed the distance.

I noticed her nervous swallow and the way her chest rose and fell with jagged, short breaths. And I wished she would stop wringing those damn hands of hers.

The string of patience broke. “I don’t have all day, dammit. What the—”

She looked over her shoulder, looking for what I don’t know. When her eyes focused back on me, she looked ready to throw herself off a building. “I’m pregnant,” she squeaked.

One second passed.

Two seconds.

Three.

My head exploded.

“What?” The timbre of my voice bounced off the walls. No. I hadn’t heard right. She didn’t say what I thought she said. “What the fuck did you just say?”

“Pregnant.” She cleared her throat, frozen in place. “I’m pregnant.”

I shook my head, horror written all over my face. “What? Fuck!” I roared, stepping further away from her. This couldn’t be happening.

“Five weeks. That is . . . that’s why I’ve been sick.”

My glare was deadly. “No.” Shaking my head empathetically, I snarled, “Are you fucking kidding me? Pregnant?”

She blinked rapidly, her breathing labored. “I didn’t realize I missed my period. I was so caught up in you and work. I didn’t . . .” Her voice trailed off as if she didn’t know what else to say.

The inside of my body felt like an inferno. Her eyes grew round when she noticed my fists clenching at my sides.

Her eyebrows hitched up half an inch. She hesitated before saying, “Seattle. At the conference. Is when it happened.
