8 Sharp Message
âCome in.â
Effortlessly, the force of the threshold fell and Thomas toppled into Artemisâ apartment.
âIâll never get used to that,â he muttered.
His friends sat around the kitchen table, enjoying fresh baked cookies. The scents of cinnamon, vanilla, and chocolate were mouthwatering.
âHey, stranger.I dunno who you think you are, pal, but you canât just go barging into someoneâs house like that,â Sean called around a mouthful of cookie.
âYeah, whoever you are! It isnât polite,â Nelson added, brandishing his half-eaten snickerdoodle at Thomas in accusation.
âVery funny,â Thomas replied as he strode over to the table and fell into his usual seat. âItâs not been that long since Iâve seen you.â
Nelsonâs smile faded for a moment, and he spoke seriously. âWe were all pretty worried after you freaked out at the pool hall. Donât feel too bad about that, though,â Nelson said with a confident grin as he ran his fingers through his hair. âI still got that waitressâ number and two dates.â
Sean punched Nelson in the shoulder.
âAnd you never got a new cell phone, so we couldnât call you,â Penny said, giving Sean a frosty glare. âWe thought youâd head back here like you did after your first, um, incident.â
Artemis ran a finger along the rim of a half full glass cup. She was having a hard time keeping still, but everyone politely ignored it.
âYou didnât show up,â she whispered. âAnd you werenât home when we stopped by. We were all very worried.â
âI know. I really am sorry about that. I didnât trust myself around people, so I headed home,â Thomas explained. âBut that wonât be a problem anymore. Iâve got it under control, sort of. I managed to draw some blood on a few donors this last week. No problem at all.â
âHey, thatâs great man. Maybe that means you can get your job back at the hospital,â Sean replied as he reached for a chocolate chip cookie.
Nelson, on the other hand, didnât look satisfied. âI donât know. Heâs only been a vampire for almost two months.â
Thomas paused. âTwo months? Itâs only been a couple of weeks.â
âNo, Thomas,â Artemis said. âItâs been a month and a half. You went to the bar with us a month and a half ago.â
His mind reeled. The days had blended together. Working long hours at the pub, spending time off with Julia. Heâd switched to his early spring jacket without realizing it. Without his phone calendar, heâd lost track of time.
Was that what it was like to be eternal?
âHowâd you forget? And how come youâre fine around blood now?â Penny asked.
âJuliaâs been a big help,â Thomas replied. âSheâs actually taken the time to walk me through calming my mind. Itâs a lot like that meditation you made us do last year, Art. Youâd like it.â
One glance at the excited and confused looks on his friendsâ faces was all it took for Thomas to realize his mistake. He groaned and leaned back in his chair.
âWhoâs Julia?â Artemis and Penny asked over each other.
Sean and Nelson grinned, nudging one another.
