Once I had come multiple times on Stevenâs desk, I stumbled out into the hallway as all the other students left for the night and Steven cleaned up my mess in the class. I leaned against the wall with my eyes closed softly and breathed out.
âSierra, right?â Michelle, Stevenâs sister, said.
âYes,â I said, gazing at her. âIf youâre looking for Steven, heâsââ
âCleaning up?â She giggled, then dropped her gaze to the necklace that Steven had gotten me at the mall on Friday night. âOh, wow. This is beautiful.â She drew her fingers across it. âDid Steven buy that for you?â
I didnât want her to think I was using him for his money because I wasnât, and I had tried hard to get him not to buy me something so expensive. But I also didnât want to lie to her because I didnât want Steven finding out.
âI didnât ask him to,â I whispered, cheeks warming.
âSo, heâs collared you.â
My brow furrowed. âWhatâs that mean?â
She parted her full lips, then lifted her gaze behind me. âYou should ask Steven.â
âSierra,â Steven called from behind me, closing up one of the back rooms, âyou ready?â
After Michelle threw me a smile, I said my goodbyes and followed Steven to the back exit near the parking garage. The drive back to his place was quiet, and I wasnât sure whenâor if I even shouldâbring it up to him. But I finally decided it was a conversation for another night when I slid into the bathtub with him.
Halfway into our bath, I shifted in the tub and crawled into Stevenâs lap. I grabbed the shampoo and squirted a bunch into my palm so I could wash his hair. After wetting it, I drew my fingers through his locks.
âSorry for kinda freaking out when you asked about my family earlier,â I whispered.
He placed his hands on my hips and squeezed, slowly opening his eyes. âItâs okay. I get it. Talking about family is hard. But you can always talk to me about it. Iâm not going to judge you, Sierra.â
My lips curled into a frown, tears building in my eyes. âMy family is dead.â
As soon as the words left my mouth, I became paralyzed to the spot, my fingers stiff in his hair, my mouth half open, and my torso flexed in a weak attempt to stop myself from sobbing uncontrollably. I had tried so hard to get over the memory, but I hadnât healed past it.
Not yet.
âA drunk driver hit their car in December of my senior year of high school, causing them to run off the road and into a freezing river. They were turning onto my street, bringing home Christmas gifts they had gotten for me.â
A tear rolled down my cheek. Maybe one day, Iâd get through it. But not today. Not soon.
âGod, Sierra,â he whispered, wrapping his arms around my waist. âIâm sorry.â
âI watched from the house⦠It happened right in front of me,â I said, voice breaking. âRight in front of me, Steven.â
âLove,â Steven mumbled into the crook of my neck.
