Personal and Family Barriers
The personal and family barriers to using adult day care services initially involve the decision to seek such a service. Families are often reluctant to give up the caregiving role to a stranger or may feel a sense of failure in asking for help. The elderly clients may be fearful of leaving a familiar environment, or reluctant to adapt to new people and new routines, or concerned that adult day care is the first step to nursing home placement. After the person is enrolled in the service, the barriers become those of cost, convenience, and transportation. It should be noted, however, that unlike institutionalization, adult day care usage represents repetitive choices by families. That is, families must decide each day to bring their elder to the day care center, addressing such issues as the elderâs desire to go that day, the weather, etc. Even though adult day care has been shown to be one of the best bargains in long term care services, the out-of-pocket costs can be prohibitive for many families. Family caregivers who work hours different from the day care program hours find additional barriers in trying to arrange for interim care. However, if these barriers can be overcome, the elderly and their families can benefit from adult day care. Regardless of the adult day care model used, the Weissert study found that participants and caregivers both are very satisfied with the care received in these programs (Weissert, et al. 1989, p. 649).
