To increase self-awareness, Hackney and Cormier (1996) suggested specific areas that professionals could examine, as detailed in Table 4.1.

Table 4.1 Potential Self-Awareness Issues for Enhancing Counselor Reflection Awareness of your needs (for example, the need to give or to nurture, the need to be critical, the need to be loved, the need to be respected, the need to be liked, the need to please others, the need to receive approval of others, the need to be right, the need for control).

Awareness of your motivation for helping (for example, What do you get or take from helping others? How does helping make you feel good?)

Awareness of your feelings (for example, happiness, satisfaction, hurt, anger, sadness, disappointment, confusion, fear).

Awareness of your personal strengths, limitations, and coping skills (for example, things about yourself you do well or like, things about yourself you need to work on, how you handle difficulties and stress).
