Chapter 14

JADE

After the midday lunchtime rush, there will apparently be another one when people get off work. At least that’s what Veruca said when she came by to check on me and make sure I hadn’t burned her store down.

Right now, I’m enjoying the peace-and-fucking-quiet between the rushes, sitting on my ass behind the register while a single vampire—possibly the same one from earlier—peruses the bookshelves.

She looks too posh and put together to be a Blackwood native. Too refined for a Cypress City vamp, so she’s got to be a Laurel Cove vamp. I don’t ask cause I don’t care and continue going through the folder of information Ms. Incognito gave me with the envelope of cash.

Her husband isn’t just any supernatural. He’s a succubus demon, which I can’t really fault her for. I’ve never had the occasion to summon a succubus, but I hear the experience is—

“Excuse me?”

Her voice is high and delicate and perfectly shrill to my train of thought.

“Can I help you?” I ask, tone not at all friendly or helpful.

“I’m looking for a certain book about—”

“Sorry, I don’t work here, just helping my friend. I don’t know anything about anything and pretty much can only ring you up,” I say without looking up from the veritable dossier Ms. Incognito had collected on her husband.

Truth be told, I probably knew if V carried the book the blonde vamp was after. But I was much more interested in digging into Ms. Incognito’s husband.

Well, that’s a lie. I’d much rather be grilling the demon lords about what they’ve discovered about my sister’s killer.

But unlike lower demons, the lords didn’t have to stay by my side, and there was no way I was pushing my luck by visiting the basilica without their permission or escort.

I’m not putting myself through that kind of psychic pain again.

I don’t like it, but I have to trust the binding magic will keep them in line.

So, since demon lords play by their own rules, getting lost in my work was my next best option.

“Yes, I heard you don’t work here earlier.”

I jump nearly outta my Docs as the vampire is suddenly leaning over the edge of the counter. I sigh and point to a different sign beside the register that clearly says No Blurring Inside Shop.

“No blurring,” I say aloud for good measure.

It’s easy to steal when you can move so fast security cameras don’t see you.

“Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize that was a rule here.” She scans the counter, eyes falling on a sign that reads Cashier Only Contains Two Pints Of Blood.

It’s a joke sign Veruca made on a whim to add some whimsy, not that Drunken Witch needs any more whimsy.

The vampire’s eyes narrow, and she holds up the wooden sign, tapping the thick edge with an elongated claw. “Is this shop prejudiced against all supernaturals or just vampires?”

I point to the other signs littered around the counter that list the different powers prohibited and finally look up to meet her sapphire blue gaze.
