Donald looked up silently from the article.

“His name is in the phone book,” Freddie said pointedly. “I looked it up before I left.”

“I’d like to speak with him,” Donald said. “Maybe we should pay him a visit tomorrow. He could be just a crazy old man.” He stood and walked over to the window, leaving the clippings on the sofa, folding his arms before him. “Then again, he could know something everyone else doesn’t.”

There was a long silence between them in which Freddie rose and walked over to stand beside Donald. Instinctively, almost without realizing it, he put his arm around her shoulders and she leaned against his sturdy frame, lay her head on his shoulder. Donald caught the vague, flowery fragrance of her hair.

I think they know about me, he thought to her. They know what I can do and that I’m... suspicious of them. Both stared silently ahead through the window. Do they know about you?

I think so.

Donald squeezed her to him just a little. We need to stay together, then. It’s safer.
