In the house, Ava was bouncy as a wallaby and rosy-cheeked with excitement. “We saw the real Santa, Finn! He had a real white beard! He let me pull it really hard and it didn’t come off!”

“She didn’t half pull hard. The poor old man had tears in his eyes.” Lizzy shuddered at the memory and poured herself a large glass of wine. “Why don’t you run upstairs, Ava, sweetheart, and get the lovely present Santa gave you?”

“Can I have a glass of wine too, love? It’s been tough going this afternoon, and it’s not over yet. I need some relaxation time.” Finn’s father gave a martyred sigh and threw himself on the couch, shoving a cushion under his head. If there had been a telly, Finn guessed he’d be reaching for the remote right now. Sometimes his dad really didn’t get the vibes.

Lizzy’s eyebrow shot up. “Um, I don’t think so! The oven’s over here, Tom. I bought some macaroni and tinned tuna. You can make a nice tuna pasta bake for dinner, and pour yourself some wine while you’re at it.”

Ignoring his protests, Finn hauled his father off the couch and pushed him towards the kitchen. Lizzy might be the enemy, but Mum would be horrified if she knew he’d let his dad get away with behaviour like that. Gran would have been chasing Dad round the kitchen, brandishing her handbag. And, more importantly, he was starving and his dad’s tuna pasta bake was amazing.

“You might imagine your afternoon has been tough, but I’ve spent mine visiting Santa with an over-excited five year-old.” Lizzy dropped the tin of tuna into Dad’s hands.

Finn smirked at him. “Yeah, Dad. Get cooking. Don’t forget to add boiled eggs. Mr McPherson will love it.”

Ava hurtled downstairs, clutching a Spider-Man figure. “Look at my toy! It has a real web shooter.” She handed the action figure to Finn.

“Nice. I might have a motorbike for him in a box at home. I’ll look it out for you.”

Ava grinned, delighted. “Santa said I couldn’t have a Spider-Man toy, because they were in the boy’s pile, but Lizzy told him he was a ‘seck-sist git’. She gave Santa a big row!”

Dad groaned. “Oh, Lizzy, you did not! Wait until you meet Duncan McPherson. Sparks are going to fly.”

Lizzy pulled a face and took a large slug of wine. “Why, is McPherson a sexist git too?”

Despite himself, Finn felt a smile flicker. It looked as though this evening could get interesting.

He started to head upstairs, but Lizzy stood in his way. “And you can help too, Finn. Lay the table, please. There are place mats in that drawer.”

Finn sighed, but he went to fetch the mats.
