Geoff, the sighing receptionist, sits at his desk, ignoring us as best he can. The model of Future Watterson sparkles in the sunlight, the centrepiece of the space. The little gold mayor statue in the middle shines brightly, making me want to pluck it from its base and shove it up McSigh’s nose so he can never sigh again. Before I can approach the receptionist, Claudio comes sashaying down the hallway.

“Casey, Cookie, Zeke! So good to see you again.”

He’s such a nice guy, I almost feel bad for what we’re about to do. But only almost.

“The mayor will be out to meet you in just a minute,” he says, showing us to a table next to the town model.

“Um,” I hesitate. “Aren’t we interviewing the mayor in her office?”

Claudio pulls out one of the seats. “Oh, she’s just getting set up for a meeting she has straight after you, so we’ll do it out here.”

I shoot Cookie and Zeke a panicked look. How are we going to make the switch if we can’t even get into the mayor’s office?

“What are we going to do?” I whisper.

“Sorry?” asks Claudio, turning over his shoulder.

Cookie holds the camera up. “I might just get some snaps for the paper while we wait?”

Claudio nods. “Just make sure you get my good side,” he says, winking.

Cookie takes photos of the model and the reception area, edging her way towards the mayor’s office, Zeke close behind. As they get near, the doors burst open, revealing the perfectly polished mayor. “Oh, hello, children, lovely to have you back. Please take a seat,” says Mayor Lupphol, ushering Zeke and Cookie back out to the reception area.

She motions towards the chairs set up at the table. “Now, I don’t have a lot of time, so how about we get straight into it?”

I glance towards the office one last time and then turn to the mayor. “Ah, we just have a few questions for you and then we’ll be out of your way.” I look at my notebook. “Firstly, we’d love to know what plans you have to make Watterson more eco-friendly and sustainable?”

The mayor shoots Claudio a look. I get the feeling this isn’t the kind of question she was hoping for.

“Well, we’re looking into lots of different options for how to improve Watterson’s recycling systems and waste management. The more we can grow the town and improve its economy, the more money we can justify for these kind of ventures.”

I raise an eyebrow at Cookie. If this was a real interview, we would tear her apart for that answer. But we have to remember why we’re here.

Cookie scribbles something on the notepad in front of her and I continue. “The Watterson Weeders Society have been petitioning for a community garden for almost two years now. Do you have any idea of when their proposal might go through?”

The mayor grinds her teeth a little. “The council receives many, many requests on a regular basis and we do our best to work our way through them, but some have to take priority over others.
